Hell Or High Water- 8/10

I'm not a movie expert by any stretch so my critique is more or less crap, but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Jeff Bridges plays a pretty good West Texas ranger, Ben Foster plays a good nut (like he does in Alpha Dog), and Chris Pine is good too. One of only a couple movies I've ever seen where I noticed how much I enjoyed the score- the music was awesome and fitting. Would definitely watch again and recommend to anybody who hasn't seen it.

I love how 'Texas' the movie feels, even though I know really very little about their 'culture'.

It's a nice little low budget flick.

Never been to west Texas but from what I've been told about it, the movie seemed to capture the culture and whatnot pretty well.

The Wailing

Loved it. As @Hugor Hill mentioned in his review, the film does a great job in makig you question what's going to happen until the very end.

Yes - though I did feel that the last switch in the end with the Japanese man to be a bit arbitrary.

Spoiler

I mean, the duel between the Shaman and the Japanese man half way through the movie looks very real. He was really hurt. Why would they stage it on the Japanese man's end? No one was there to watch it and thus be fooled by it.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople - 8/10

Cute. Haven't seen Sam Neill nor have I seen a New Zealand movie for a while.

Really liked this one. I'd give it an 8.5/10.

Was directed by the guy that did "What we do in the Shadows", which was one of the best comedies of 2015 for my money.

Been trying to get into the Americans, but not liking it as much as others (but it is certainly not bad).

The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) - Irish flick about the IRA in the 1920s, nicely shot, so much green and grey, some very decent acting, was really enjoying it until I realized that every Englishman in the film was an over-the-top vicious snarling crazed brutal sadistic animal straight out of Braveheart or The Patriot and I started to wonder if the director was actually ol' Sugartits himself using a fake name ... 6.5/10

Cinema Paradiso (1988) - Nope. Quit 20 minutes in because of that hideous little half-bat, half-boy, rat bastard Italian kid that I wanted to put in a burlap sack and throw into the river. "Eh! Oh! A' Mama! Spaghetti! Eh!"  Shut up ... just shut the hell up.

(I'll try it again one day though)

I liked The Wind that Shakes the Barley, but if you're interested in suffering irish people, check out Hunger if you haven't already

Little Sister: 9/10

Little Sister is another of those "indie comedy-drama" movies, but instead of it relying on flavour-of-the-week references (like Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl), or relying on paint-by-numbers suburban lameness (like The Way, Way Back), or relying on the overwrought familiarity of hipster uniqueness (like everything Miranda July has ever touched), it wonderfully combines ALL of these things into one great little movie.

It's somehow about family, mental health, politics, war, sex, religion, and yet it's never preachy. Similarly, the movie isn't excessive or too cool for school despite its assload of film or music references. It isn't super cinematic or a total spectacle or anything, but I just didn't have any complaints about it at all. Just thoroughly enjoyed it.

Cinema Paradiso and Jaws? Were you watching movies at Giancarlo Montyobelli's house? (Monty's uncle from Napoli)

Watched a doc on that situation years ago so I definitely am interested. (been trying to find the doc online just now but can't, maybe it was a one hour PBS "Frontline" type of deal or something) But yeah, I'll give it a watch. I like the cast as well, Liam Cunningham and his frown are always entertaining. Also I probably would've brushed Little Sister aside as "oh god, another quirky one" if I hadn't read your post. (and by probably, I mean definitely)

it is just "another quirky one" really, it just works for me because it isn't lame as hell about things. I never would have watched it if Lord Critic Jew God himself Richard Brody hadn't listed it as his #1 movie of the year. i watched it ready to roll my eyes so maybe in my expecting it to suck i was so pleasantly surprised that I'm not overrating it

do me a favour and don't watch it so I can go on thinking it's great

Haha, okay it's a deal.
Then do me a favour and don't watch Nocturnal Animals, I'm sadistically proud of my 0/10 rating and would hate to have my viewpoint changed to a 1/10.

Moonlight - 10/10

Wow. Wow. Wow.

Although I watched in 2017, it is hands down the best movie released in 2016. The acting is ridiculously amazing from every person in the film. It doesn't rely on cliches that typically happens in an all black movie. I would recommend this movie to everyone, probably going to watch it again tonight.

David Brent: Life on the Road: 6/10

Alright, this is really a 5/10 movie at best, but because I love the David Brent character so much it gets a sympathy point. But in all honesty this movie pretty much sucks. I definitely had a few good laughs, but it is just a shade of The Office. If you're a hardcore fan of the show (UK), you may be curious. If you aren't, don't bother.

Watched the preview MONTHS ago. Immediately forgot about it.
