hacksaw ridge: 5.5/10

i'm not a war movie guy at all, so this didn't stand much of a chance. admittedly, it's a fantastic story, just through a cartoonish perspective. and no, i'm not talking about the frequent green screen and animated ships, i'm talking about the meat shields, the glowing descent, the vince vaughn sled, etc.

that wife made it worth it though

^ You are on quite the movie and doc rampage lately.

I recently watched a really cool one from 1946 called A Matter of Life and Death, by the director duo who did The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus and many more that I want to see ... It's a fantasy/romance/drama with lots of neat special effects. All the scenes in heaven were black & white and all the scenes on Earth were in colour ("glorious technicolor!"). Had a fun story as well. Really liked this one and would recommend it to anyone. 8.5/10

Some images of heaven from it:

Also, I finally checked out the Before trilogy (Sunrise/ Sunset/ Midnight), and found the dialogue so painful and embarrassing and uptight that I don't know if I can bring myself to watch the third one. I even flushed the first two out of my system with a different French girl by re-watching Amélie and loving it.

I didn't get any xmas holidays until the last little bit, so I've been spending an assload of time watching life-enriching things like Mark Wahlberg battle fires and various movies about Christians

also I feel like I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't really like Amelie

Aah, and completely terrifying docs like Tickled. (it sounds so creepy)

Was it Amélie herself that you didn't like, or just the whole vibe? Or was it the little guy with the false teeth? I do actually hate him.

And geezus you know your insomnia is bad when you're seriously contemplating watching shark movies for the sole purpose of insulting Monty afterwards ...

Sarcasm? I hated it.

No sarcasm. War films/shows/docs are my jam. Hugely critical of them and can't re-watch them after the first viewing (safe Band of Brothers), but there is no film genre I love and am more critical of.

One of the reasons I refuse to watch Monuments Men.

Silence: 7.5ish/10

Scorsese does it again! By "it" I mean make an extraordinarily long movie that left me confused about whether or not I even enjoyed it.

Too often "Christian movies" fumble into absurd self-righteousness, but this one gives a fair position to all (or most) involved. For me, it was difficult to relate to the made-comedic absurdity of some Christian rituals just as it's easy to relate to Japanese men who view Christians as imperialists worth torturing. Frankly, I think the whole "god's silence" thing has been done better many, many times before, but in a time where comic book movies and pandering ideological fluff dominate the box office, I guess this is rewarding for its subtlety even when its brash and graphic

Well... if (the guy from) Ichi the Killer is in it, then perhaps I'll watch.

The Founder

Just saw this last night at a sneak preview.  It was a good story.  It followed the life of Ray Kroc as he went from being a milkshake mixer sales guy to the head of McDonald's.  I have no way to know how historically accurate it was but it seemed fairly plausible.

Overall, I really enjoyed it, but it could be that it appealed to me more because I worked at McD's back in my youth.

7/10

The Nice Guys - 8.5/10

I genuinely loved this movie. Both in its stylistic nature, and its sense of humour, it was one of those experiences that someone kind of tailor made for me.

It had a vague mystery that revealed itself at the right pace. It was simultaneously dark when it was supposed to be funny, and carried this brevity when it was supposed to be serious. It was off kilter. but never enough that I stopped caring about the characters and what they were going through.

It's the second best movie of 2016 I've seen. And while I did love it like I said, it's not a badge of praise. Behind 10 Cloverfield Lane, it's literally just one of two good movies I saw this year. The rest were garbage like Captain America Civil War, Rouge One, X-men Apocalypse, and all around nonsense that made up the fluff of big releases this year.

Tell me some good movies to watch. I could really use them, lol.

Birth Of A Nation 6.5/10

Based on a true story of a slave rebellion in 1809. Lot of controversy with this one as many feel it sanitizes the actual brutality of the rebellion. Women and children were killed in the real rebellion but that is never shown. Also many have rated it very poorly based upon the rape trial of writer/director/actor Nate Parker in 1999 when he was in college. For which he was controversially acquitted.

It's no "12 Years a Slave" but it's worth a watch as there aren't many decent movies about this topic.

I think I've rated this before, but it is just sooo good. Tina Fey needs to go back to writing TV shows and stop with the movies.

I consider you one of the best reviewers here but:

what did you expect of captain America, rogue one, and Xmen?!?

specifically comic book movies I expect trash and wouldn't even consider investing time in.

Didn't expect anything, but they were all less than that.

I don't actively choose to go to these movies anymore. I just end up at them. The only one of those I vaguely anticipated was Captain America, because I really liked the second one. This third one looked bad though, and was worse than that.

I didn't choose a single movie to watch this year. But with some movies this year I definitely will.

The Handmaiden - first half 9.5/10, second half - 7.5/10

A rule in suspense / thriller movies: If the audience don't know what's going on, it's awesome. When they know what's going on, it's average at best.

....

The Handmaiden, so far, is my #1 for 2016. (haven't seen Moonlight or Affleck By The Sea yet)  Just so amazingly beautiful to look at and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. But yeah it did go down a bit for me in the end as well, to an 8.5  It's also the one I was about to recommend to g_bassi for something different ... so uh, g_bassi, you've got to watch it, it's amazing, sorry Hugor Hill completely destroyed my enthusiasm. hehe

And since I'm at it:
I watched Hunt for the Wilderpeople last night and wow did my opinion seasaw up and down after the first 30 minutes (mostly due to the kid's acting and some odd bits of cheese here and there). But I loved the wife/auntie, and the heavenly doorways to delicious snacks and Fanta and the double door of tricky Jesus. By the time the credits rolled I was feeling happy, so that's always a good thing. The ol' 6.975/10.
