Rate The Last Movie You Saw - 2

Manchester by the Sea

Really don't know how to rate this, to be honest. I liked it, but don't think I'd watch it again. Heartbreaking, sad, etc.

Was it worth watching? Probably not. Then again, no movie is really worth watching; at least, that's how I feel the older I get.

Watching Affleck's character reaction during and immediately after talking to the police was truly sad. That moment caught exactly what all men would feel like and likely feel like doing as well.

No, just no longer in my early 20s and single.

I mean, movies don't put food on my table, mow my lawn for me, pay for my mortgage, or do my housework.

They're an escape. And as good as Manchester by the Sea is, it's not an overly terrific escape.

star wars: rogue one: 4/10

there's something really cool about seeing big star destroyers and the traditional star wars ships flying around using contemporary technology, but that only goes so far. can't even call it a disappointment since i had low expectations going in, but for some reason it seemed even worse than i was expecting

this movie has no heart, minimal character development (mostly just placeholders), some insanely ridiculous coincidences around each narrative corner, and about 45+ minutes of scenes of nameless, faceless storm troopers getting blasted down. the dialogue was repetitive and not clever (despite trying so hard to be at times)--oh, speaking of which, that new droid was dumb too.

vader scene was neat. the CGI classic characters were not.

edit: i say this every time i see a 3d movie, but i am so over 3d. i find it impossible to look at anything on the screen except the one piece of the image that is popping out. even when the backgrounds arent necessarily blurry, they just seem so removed from the screen. i feel like it REALLY takes away from so much of the experience as you have to look at each individual section of the screen almost wilfully rather than it just being a natural frame

Miss Sloane: 4/10

Felt like 2 hours of a Shonda Rhimes tv show.

I really wanted to see Trespass Against Us, because I love Brendan Gleason, but it got absolutely torched (e.g., worst movie of the year) in its reviews.

What don't you like about it? I think I gave it the 7-8.5 range.

btw, DiCaprio isn't--maybe never was--going to play the lead in a new Scarface movie. it's actually that same dude from Star Wars, Diego Luna, who is in it

and other movie news: Denis Villeneuve (Canadian!) who did Arrival, Sicario, Prisoners, etc. is now signed up to direct the new Dune movie.

Interesting. I just read Dune recently and it really doesn't seem like something you could easily translate into a movie. We'll see but I have really liked what he's done with all his recent movies.

Yeah it's a long read but well worth it imo.

Haven't seen and probably will never see the David Lynch version due to all the negative reviews I've heard. That documentary looks interesting though. Might have to check that out.

Groundhog Day - 10/10

I don't know how many times I've reviewed this movie here, but I love rewatching it.

It's a unique specimen. There's not a lot of movies that get better every time I watch it. Sure there are some that demand a repeat viewing for a better understanding, but for every one of those, there's 5 whose flaws become more apparent.

And of those that demand repeat viewings, I don't think there's a single one that got better moving from viewing 45 to 46.

I do wonder how many times he lived that last specific perfect day, but I like to think it was just once.

Edit: there's an all day marathon going on AMC for this. It's a nice touch, lol.
