The Bookie
I tried to do a top ten and couldn't get past five. After that they all blend together in a verygood--almostgreat soup. 1. The Witch 2. Moonlight 3. Hypernormalisation 4. Arrival 5. Silence honorable mentions to Hell or High Water, 10 Cloverfield Lane, American Honey, Captain Fantastic, Lo & Behold, Hunt For The Wilderpeople + others I'm sure the best not-released-in-2016 movie that snuck up on me was Faults

Down by the River
1. Eye in the Sky 2. The Hunt for Wilderpeople 3. Hell or High Water 4. The Lobster (though I still don't understand how this is a 2016 movie... but Yahoo is saying it is) I can't even think of a fifth movie... I haven't seen a lot of 2016 movies (Moonlight/Paterson would probably rate). Musicals are the worst. Just the worst.

Someone was recommending it to me somewhere very recently and I hadn't heard of it, and already forgot. Will check it.
Hugor Hill
The movies I dig the most in 2016 weren't actually released in 2016. Mind you, I don't think I have seen any of the best picture nominees (was The Arrival one of them?). I have only READ the script to Manchester By The Sea. Hugor Hill
Nocturnal Animations - 8.5/10 Interesting how Tom Ford made the jump from fashion to Hollywood. I enjoyed watching it. I even 'get' the movie, after reading some reviews. The main point is blunt, but the subtleties are subtle. I don't think the ending was as powerful as he hoped it would be. It'll be entertaining, but it's looking pretty repetitive. Land on planet, explore, what are these pods?, Technology! I will fight you yet you will save me. The Aliens are looking mega cgi too. Hugor Hill
The East - 8/10 It felt slow even though the plot moves forward at a fairly respectable pace... probably because the plot kicked in very early in the film, which I guess is a good thing. It was intense at times but it misses something. For those who have seen it, I felt that the protagonist needed to choose a side and stick with it and pay the consequences of choosing that side. She never did and she was never made to be punished. The idea of the climax was ingenious, but the story in the end didn't roll out as great as you would want it to be. Violator
Fantastic beasts and were to find them 7/10 I don't like Eddie redmayne Everytime I see him in a movie he looks like a pedophile.this is only the second Harry Potter movie I have watched the first being part 2 this was infinitely better than that. aGENT
Watched Arrival last night....Holy f'ing good/10 (or say, 9 if you insist on a number). My wife was already crying during opening lol but both of us had waterworks going by the end. Spawning sure does a number on your emotions I've always like Adams but she KILLED it in this. The story and directing were obviously top notch as well but her performance sold those elements SO well. I really can't say enough about her work here. The emotion and nuance at the end there was especially gut wrenching to watch. Exceedingly well done, original, thought provoking, gut wrenching Sci Fi done the way it should be. One of the best films I've seen this year...maybe even the last 5'ish. Edited March 6, 2017 by J.R.
hammertime
Just watched Gun woman on netflix. All I have to say is holy smokes. The story was fantastic the cinematography even better. If if this were a silent film I would be giving this film an 8 or better. The script was absolute garbage and the acting was a dumpster fire especially between the 2 in the white car telling the story. I'm giving it a 5 only propped up by imagery that will be burned into my mind for a long time. ***Disclaimer DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS WATCH THIS FILM!*** Film contains Scenes of extreme blood soaked naked violence, stockholm syndrome, rape, necrofelia and truly disturbing imagery. I need a smoke! Edited March 6, 2017 by hammertime
