There's your problem.

I liked Kim's Convenience. Though that is a comedy, what I liked about it was the drama and development between characters.

Between Cardinal and Bellevue, both are 6 part mini series taking place in a small Canadian town, where a brash detective is looking missing teens in a race against time, while dealing with their own family drama.

I know CTV isn't CBC, but with similar budgets, conecepts and goals, it shouldn't be where one is great and one is awful. With Cardinal being successful enough to become an ongoing series with 2 more seasons, it's probably my favourite show on TV not named Last Man on Earth. With Bellevue, again, I don't think it earned that second episode watch for me.

Watched Arrival last night....Holy f'ing good/10 (or say, 9 if you insist on a number).

My wife was already crying during opening lol but both of us had waterworks going by the end. Spawning sure does a number on your emotions

I've always like Adams but she KILLED it in this. The story and directing were obviously top notch as well but her performance sold those elements SO well. I really can't say enough about her work here. The emotion and nuance at the end there was especially gut wrenching to watch.

Exceedingly well done, original, thought provoking, gut wrenching Sci Fi done the way it should be. One of the best films I've seen this year...maybe even the last 5'ish.

Oh boy....was just on another forum where a poster basically complained that the ending was too confusing/hard to understand and that they should have dumbed it down to appeal to a broader audience...

Get Out

Absolutely loved it. Incredibly solid cast, most of whom I'm familiar with, except for the main girl (never saw her before). Terrific directing/writing debut for Jordan Peele as well.

Slow burning horror/thrillers are usually more hit than miss, and this was no different. Now, I'm not sure how it would hold up in repeat viewings, but it was definitely worth watching.

The Love Witch   7.5?/10

This is a weird one. Amazingly stylish in a DIY, pure hard work and attention to detail way (the writer/director also does the art & set design, costumes, make up etc.) and it's a dedicated retro throwback trip. But then it's so over the top cheeseballs camp that I had to take two breaks while watching, like it was just too much. At least the acting walked the line perfectly between 'is this bad acting?' and 'oh, I think they're winking at me, wait, no'. Even the gender/sexual politics were confusing. There might be more to chew on, or it could just be a soft-core porn movie. WTFKnows.

I had very literally the exact same reaction. I had no idea what to make of the movie and I had to stop it multiple times too. For some reason, that feels like a positive to me. But at the same time... I dunno if I could say I enjoyed it in the end?

Also, after The Cabin in the Woods and now Get Out, safe to say that all horror movies should star Bradley Whitford.

Gets me thinking. I'm wondering if all horror films should star at least one of the following:

- Bradley Whitford

- Brad Dourif

- Jeffrey Combs

Tried watching the first episode of the show Bellevue on CBC. It was just one episode, but it was so awkwardly and poorly done.

It's a show about a missing kid, but it's all over the place in its focus. I barely know what's going on at any given moment, and even less about the whole story overall.

It's a similar premise to the mini-series Cardinal that just finished airing a week or two ago, but where that was incredibly well done, this is the opposite in terms of execution. I think CBC and the show's producers had the same influences and motivation as CTV and Cardinal to put out what should ultimately have been a really similar show, but they missed so hard that I can't see myself bothering with the second episode.

Cardinal vs Bellevue

I just finished watching both pilots. Here are my first impressions:

1) Bellevue is such a True Detective wannabe, with the sex and missing children and religion and everything. Cardinal went for the TD look and feel but it's not as blatant.

2) Despite being a TD wannabe, Bellevue totally misses TD season one's theme, which is, at the end of the day, friendship. Bellevue misses the mark so badly Anna Paquin's character doesn't even have a partner.

3) Without fact checking, Cardinal has a far bigger budget (or at least they didn't spend all their money to bring in a well compensated movie star like True Detective wannabe did). No question.

4) I very much dislike the actor who plays Cardinal. On top of his ordinary, nondescript look and monotonous emotional range, his damn scratchy voice sounds like he is always trying to whisper very loudly.

5) I'm not a huge fan of neither shows at this point, but the very first scene of Bellevue is just pathetic. After that, they tried to push the plot forward as fast as possible but yeah, like you said, it's all over the place. It's like they think throwing lots of story threads at the viewer as quickly as possible is a good way of telling a story. Again, a TD wannabe but done very poorly.

6) I very much dislike partnering a young attractive woman with an old man in Cardinal. It's ageism and sexism and unrealistic all rolled into one. And no, trying to dig dirt out of him is not a good excuse. For this alone I don't want to keep watching it out of general principle.

7) Bellevue has an inherit advantage that its protagonist is a likeable and attractive female (who doesn't even have a partner), so naturally we are always worried about her safety. But if you are relying on this alone to keep viewers interested, then the show has problems.

8) I think Bellevue has one thing going for it, it's Paquin's personal storyline - that the crime today has something to do with her childhood. It's... cheaply intriguing like a teen horror movie.

Should let you know that the trailer makes it look a lot more serious than it actually is. While violent, it's certainly more comedy than anything.

Watched it last night. Definitely f'd but both the wife and I loved it other than it reminding us how much we hate most people

Alison Williams:bigblush:  She's my current tv crush and is one of the stars of Girls on HBO(last season).  She's the daughter of Brian Williams the disgraced TV anchor.

Body Parts (1990) - Laughed hard/10

One of the dumbest horror films I have ever seen. Quick synopsis.

Psychiatrist gets in one of the funniest car crashes I have ever seen (which should have killed him). Only loses his arm (WTF?) and gets a working arm transplant (again, WTF?). Turns out, his arm came from a donor who was a serial killer on death row. His arm ends up having a mind of its own (but only sometimes) and ends up doing different things (ie: improved f**gering skills, hits his son, strangle his wife, etc). Tracks down other people who also got transplants from same murderer (other arm and legs).

Long story short. Fantastic.
