A ‘friend’ has been charged in the New Year’s Eve murder of a 40-year-old man in Langley.

Cole Adam Manning of Cloverdale was found dead in a home in the 19800-block 69th Avenue at about 7:30 a.m.

RCMP responded to the scene with firefighters and quickly identified a suspect.

With the help of Abbotsford police, they located his vehicle in the area of 264th Street, north of Highway 1. Officers pursued the vehicle south on 264th and then forced it off the road near 40th Avenue, in a brief car-chase. They arrested a man just after 9:30 a.m.

No one was hurt in the pursuit, but an RCMP vehicle was damaged.

Jason Terrence Brewer, a 24-year-old Langley resident, has been charged with second-degree murder in relation to Manning’s death.

Police say Brewer was known to police and that the two men were friends. They would not elaborate on the motive for the murder or the cause of Manning’s death.

“The victim and suspect are believed to be friends, however, IHIT investigators continue to explore the motive for this homicide. At this point we can say this is not gang related, “ Sgt. Jennifer Pound said in a release.

Manning was renting the basement suite in a Willoughby house at the time of his death. He hadn’t been there long before the incident.

Brewer will appear in Surrey Provincial Court Wednesday afternoon and is expected to remain in police custody, Pound said.

She added that further information about the victim’s cause of death could come after an autopsy is performed Wednesday afternoon.

Brewer has criminal charges dating back to 2009, including criminal negligence causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon.

More to come.
