[Report] Heat stay in Abbotsford next year

Recommended Posts

Not sure there are a lot of viable western Canadian landing spots like they had in Winnipeg for the team. All the non NHL cities with appropriate facilities have WHL teams.

Options right now:

Peoria - status quo.

Utica - this was Calgary's rumored landing spot.

Houston - MInny is moving their team out of Houston. Houston averaged decent crowds last year.

Kansas City - throwing it out there as a city with a big league arena that has no tenant.

Tulsa, DesMoines - midwest cites with big rinks and no AHL teams.

LAs Vegas - western city, close flight. Good environment for developing young players?

Langley - Probably not realistic, but throwing it out there. Arena only holds 5500, but the Heat drew less than this. Most AHL teams average 5000-6000 per game. This would essentially bankrupt the Abbotsford franchise and burn any future bridge to move there. Not sure about territorial rights/relocation issues in the AHL. Probably not worth it, if the end game for Vancouver is to eventually move to Abby.
