Some of the very people who complain about public sector union pay/benefits are themselves getting fat off the public purse. Look no further than ole El Drunko Gordie and his six figure BC pension that he gets to collect even while he gets a cushy six figure pay day with swanky benefits in jolly ole London from Herr Harper and the CRAP's (CONservative Reform Alliance Party).

I would love the complainers to explain how MLA's and senior bureaucrats get regular raises, gold plated pensions, beautiful severance packages. Oh wait, they would say something about how they need to compare to how the private sector pays senior managers etc.

There may be examples of private sector employees getting less than the public sector equivalent, but there are also examples where similar private sector employees can get more than the public sector equivalent. It's always going to be a tug-of-war.

This comes after having their last contract torn up by Liberals. Despite the meagre increase christy didn't even want to give them that. This pay raise comes as part of a short term contract that was only given out by the liberals because they were about to face a hug fight with HEU. The union was threatening a strike and had a strike vote that was 95% in favour across all of BC, Christy smartly decided not to fight it out with the union with an election right around the corner and instead offered them a short term contract with small increases such as this rather than the status quo or decreases that had been previously offered.

Since the BC Liberals came to power HEU has had a 15 % wage roll back - approx 6 per cent applied for most covering 2006-2010 - from 2010-2012 it was zero and zero and loss of 2 days vacation and now its 3% across the board. Thats +9 and -15 over the BC liberal years ... most are still 5-6% below their 2002 wages. Under the NDP it was almost all zeros for 10 years - just pay equity adjustments for some classifications. It was 0-0 - 0-0-2 and 0-1- COA if I remember. They did get alot of non monetary increases though. People saying that with the NDP unions get big raises do not have their facts correct. In 2001 union members across the province turned on the NDP as they where tired of zero contracts....

And as for the increases - with the LPN's gone the majority of employees in the HEU hospital contracts are care aides. They started out at $21.94 per hour

With 2 % applied on Jan 1st it raised it approx .44 cents per hour to $22.38 an hour. On April 1st it went up a further 1% So the raise April 1st was for 22 cents per hour raising the hourly rate to $22.60 or for the period covering 2010-2014 a total raise of 66 cents per hour. Hardly living high on the hog as some would have people believe

Oh and since 2010 every penny increased in the contracts had to come from reductions within the contracts - NET zero's - this last go around they had to pay 1/2 of the cost of the 66 cent an hour raise - cooperative gains mandates.

So really for the period covering 2010-2014 saw new money raises of 1.5% as they had to pay for the other half with benifit changes. So HEU hospital workers recieved on average a 0.375% yearly increase from 2010 - 2014.

No real issue with this for certain employees, however, the employees included in the union needs to change. Stories like this irk me:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/story/2012/05/31/wdr-tim-hortons-windsor-regional-hospital.html

Tim Horton's employees making $26.00/hr plus pension/benefits, because their fast food restaurant happens to be in the hospital.

So do this come under the rubric of:

Having actually lived through past BC NDP administrations, this does not look good. The Dix led BC NDP is being guided by the same group that brought you the last disaster of the Harcourt/Clark/Miller/Dosanjh quartet. And I see little that has changed.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

The BC LIberals may not be great but they are appreciably better than the BC NDP led by the Happy Class Warrior Adrian Dix - if you liked Glen Clark you are going to love his protege Adrian Dix.

I know people who are HEU members and told me their big, fat, whooping pay increase which the Liberals and right-wingers would have you believe, worked out to a whoopy .22 cents hour increase.

The other day when Dix was campaigning and pledging money for Health Care, Clark made some reference about a blank cheque for union bosses. Seemed like she was referring to HEU.
