Adding toughness/experience/skill

Recommended Posts

Trades:

To New Jersey: Roberto Luongo, Alex Burrows, Chris Higgins

To Vancouver: Ryan Carter, 1st round pick

I just don't believe there will be high demand from multiple teams for Luongo so I see New Jersey as a good fit. They get a starting goalie who can split games with Brodeur and take over when he retires. They also get two 3rd liners/top 6 complimentary forwards who are signed long term and play their system of hockey well. (probably unlikely Higgins gets traded since we just re-signed him)

Vancouver gets a top 10 pick in the draft and a 4th liner who is really effective at his role, can play PK, and also jump up to the 3rd line if need be. He would provide stability to our 4th line that has involved revolving parts for awhile. Value could be off in this trade but I don't really know what type of players are coming in this years draft.

To Calgary: Keith Ballard, Jordan Schroeder, Frankie Corrado, 4th round pick

To Vancouver: Mark Giordano, Tim Jackman

Calgary gets a top 4 defenseman, a potential top 6 forward, and a promising young prospect in Corrado who looks NHL-ready and has top 4 potential in a few years. Calgary does it so they acquire some solid young pieces to build around since their prospect pool isn't as deep as it should be.

Vancouver does this so they get a puck mover that we've missed ever since Ehrhoff left. Giordano can also lay the body and he can man the point on our first power play unit along with Garrison. Sucks to let Corrado go but you gotta give up talent to get it.

To Philly: Alex Edler

To Vancouver: Wayne Simmonds, 3rd round pick

Philly seems to be desperate for defensemen and Alex Edler has all the physical traits that you look for in a prototypical #1 defenseman. Although Edler still needs polishing in his game, under a new coach he can still improve plus he already brings physicality and is good for 40+ points a year.

Vancouver gets an energy guy who can drop the gloves and looks to be growing every year into an effective top 6 winger. His play style suits the Sedins as well.

UFA/RFA Signings:

Brenden Morrow - 2 years @ 2.5m

- Aging but still an effective 3rd liner who brings leadership/toughness. May not get that much interest or offered that much money in the open market. He could see Vancouver as a solid chance at a Cup.

Jaromir Jagr - 1 year @ 3.5m

- Brings us great playmaking and offensive awareness for our 2nd line that needs it. Has plenty of experience and could help rejuvinate Kesler back into a 70 point player. May not be likely we land him but who knows.

Mark Fistric/Douglas Murray - 2 years @ 1.5-2m

- Which ever one is available, we could use their size and physicality on our defense that lacks a real crease-clearer and a guy who can throw devasting body checks.

Chris Tanev 2/3 years @ 1.5-2m

-Brings reliable defensive play and will be steady on our 3rd pairing.

Lineup:

Sedin - Sedin - Kassian

Jagr - Kesler - Simmonds

Morrow - Gaunce - Hansen

Carter - Lain - Jackman

Sestito/Weise/Pinizzotto

Hamhuis - Bieksa

Giordano - Garrison

Fistric/Murray - Tanev

Alberts

Schneider

Lack

IMO that's a lineup with balance and a good mix of size/skill and youngsters/veterans. Thoughts?

Corrado will make the lineup in a year or 2, why trade him for Giordano?

I also can't see the Devils trading their pick this year, as they have to forfeit next year's pick already.

On paper these deals seem reasonable, though Jersey should add a prospect(youngD?). Fine go out drinkin'/negotiating with Lou Lamoreillo-don't be surprised if yer wallet's missing, next day (the bloke doesn't lose on many deals)...

Love the Simmonds idea; but it has to be in concert with other D arriving(as you did with Giordano).

sidenote: Believe NJ might have a cash-crunch they're underreporting.(ownership-issues?). Might be unlikely they'd take on so much contract, perhaps they're aiming for the floor.
