My Fandom in Review

Dear Canuck Nation,

I've been a proud Canuck's supporter since the 2006-2007 season, and I have to say that after this season, I have never felt more disappointed and disheartened by the lack of motivation by the boys. They played all but one game without any desire to win. For the most part, they found ways to win games, but it wasn't at all in the interest of the fans. It's come to my conclusion (and with verification from sources) that the current group of players on the Vancouver Canucks are no longer motivated to win, but rather, they are more interested in playing golf, having time with themselves and forgetting about what made them millionaires... the fans. While I will continue to watch this club throughout the years, through thick and thin, I have come to a disappointing conclusion that my standards and expectations for the team moving forward is at a bottom low. Until something seriously happens to this club, I do not expect anything at all from a group of unmotivated players and managers. While Roberto Luongo was by far, our only guy playing with absolute passion, the rest stood there, watching pucks fly past them, and did not play to their potential.

As a Canuck Supporter, my hopes and dreams have been crushed and do not see them being restored in the immediate future.

I understand your feelings.... While I don't quite buy that the team doesn't care anymore or would rather be golfing.... But they are definitely missing that spark. If you've ever played team sports I'm sure you've experienced the same thing, you all want to win but for whatever reason it's just not happening for you.

I do believe the guys can easily turn it around though, as you noted they only played 1 game at full stride last year... And they dominated one of the best teams in the league. I feel they have too many top 9 players that can move around and play anywhere, we need to get some defined role players. A true 3rd line C would be key, and a nasty 4th line would be nice as well. Also a new top 6 scorer would help give the team a different identity.

I wonder what kind of returns we would get for guys like burr or Hansen... I don't really want to lose either of them, but you need to give to get and they may fetch a decent return.

I don't know, at the very least it should be an interesting off season...

While this is not really a rebuttal to you, I just wanted to say as a fan of the team for about 30 years now, the last dozen have been outstanding as a whole, and the years since the OP joined us in fandom have been exquisite, when compared to 90% of the years before 2001.

It is all relative: if you expect and demand the team win the CUP every year, then they will suck every year by your standards..if you expect they will compete for it, and have overall winning seasons, then you will be very proud of the team you cheer for.

I am pretty proud of the guys, but I do think the coach needs to go, he is like three day old fish right now.

The two bolded parts stood out to me.

1. How do you know their motivation level? Unless you're inside their heads (you're not), you have no idea of their "desire" to win.

2. This is ridiculous..."verification from sources" of their lack of motivation? No.

They did take a blow over the past few years and I do believe that it's hard to get to the same level of compete again...that it was like being knocked off their feet and there's been a period of getting back up/brushing themselves off. But I don't buy what you're selling here.

Magic numbers or not, there is no magic that has you speak for the players and I'm pretty sure they wanted to win. Different setbacks (that you likely don't know of) mean that, at any given time, guys may be struggling. Illness, undisclosed injury, slumps. But I don't think they're preoccupied with golf, etc. or they could simply quit and carry on with what they love to do. They're certainly in a positition to.

Nonsense. My magic number for this thread is 0/10.

Personally I think this is the very bottom. Ive been a fan since I was a toddler, and I am in my early 20's.

Being embarrassed in the first round and having NOTHING to look forward to in terms of prospects is rock bottom.

I'd rather us have a terrible season and be excited for the draft ( even though my farts have more draft wisdom than Gillis & co ) .

Than have a mediocre season, be given a playoff spot, hoping that some sort of switch will be flipped.

Then get kicked in the junk by dissapointment. With nothing but downhill to look forward to.

My NHL fandom is far more in question then my canucks fandom. I just don't want to watch this bastardized game anymore thanks to shanahan, Campbell and betman. The Canuck as a team are fine, but I have no interest in a league that plays favorites towards bigger markets such as New York, and Chicago . Enough is enough I am officially boycotting the product on the ice. And anything else the old boys get revenue from. Time to go buy my first canucks jersey, on Craigslist!

Boy, do you have a lot to learn about this team and our history.....

By your own admission, you've been a fan since about 2000 or so (one who actually watches, as toddlers don't generally "absorb" the game beyond putting their arms up and yelling "YEA" when Mom & Dad do).

Believe me, this is far from the bottom. This team hasn't even plummeted out of the top yet.

If you'd "rather we have a terrible season" you're not really a fan in my eyes....it's like saying I hope my house burns down so I get new stuff.

Actually, this topic has nothing to do with Canucks Talk beyond "I'm mad at the Canucks" (and there are plenty of places for those thoughts). Six years may not be enough of a sample size for you to determine anything and these are simply your feelings...they don't represent the fanbase as a whole or require their own thread. For those reasons....
