Alex Edler could land quite a BIT

Since there is no news on the Vigneault front and I want to exhaust every potential Canuck topic before free agency even begins here is one. What could the Canucks get in a Alex Edler Trade.

Jason Botchford wrote an article last week in the Province examining the very same issue but in more general terms.

Perhaps the most important thing Botch stated which is true is that good young defencemen such as Edler get a lot of value.

Consider the following 2 trades involving young dmen (these Botchford mentioned as well)

Feb 2011 (Alex Golgoski trade)

To Pittsburgh:

James Neal

Matt Niskanen

To Dallas:

Alex Golgoski

At the time of the trade deadline Golgoski's best season had been the one before the transaction where he racked up 37 points and was a -1. Pittsburgh hit a homer by acquiring a 23 year old James Neal who had scored 20+ goals in his first 3 seasons and Matt Niskanen who hadbeen a solid #4-5 dman.

Feb 2011 (Erik Johnson trade)

To Stl:

Chris Stewart

Kevin Shattenkirk

2nd rnd pick

To Colorado:

Erik Johnson

Jay McClement

1st rnd pick

At the time of the deal Johnson had not panned out as expected. He was a former 1st overall pick who had been so so but even then he landed exponential value. Kevin Shattenkirk was having a good rookie season (especially offensively) while Chris Stewart was averaging almost a point a game while coming off a sophomore season where he scored 64 points.

The reason I specifically mentioned these 2 trades is because they involved yound dmen and while Edler is older (27) his best is still yet to come.

Even when we look at trades involving older defencemen the conclusion still is that goalies 2nd best friends tend to be worth quite a bit.

For example when Dan Boyle was traded from Tampa Bay to San Jose he landed the Lightning a great young dman in Matt Carle, a first round dman in Ty Wishart and another first round pick.

Chris Pronger (though much better when being traded) landed multiple young assets for the Oilers and Ducks.

Compounding all of this is the fact that this years free agency market is very under saturated. All positions lack quantity but this problem is most prevalent in terms of defencemen. After Mark Streit, Sergei Gonchar, Ryan Whitney and Rob Scuderi the pickings are quite slim. Even out of the four mentioned, the only dman who is on the level of Edler is Streit.

As a result here are a list of 6 guys I believe Edler could land and why they maybe good fits. All of them are forwards simply because I believe the Canucks biggest weakness at the moment is at forward.

6 forwards Edler could land

Bobby Ryan (Anahiem)-Good younger forward who at the age of 26 still has not reached his prime years. He has scored 30+ goals in his last 4 FULL NHL seasons. He would be a perfect winger with Kesler and has been rumored to be on the chopping block for a while now. Did I also mention Anahiem needs dmen

Loui Eriksson (Dallas)-This name has become popular over the past couple of weeks due to the IIHF World Championships and the fact he played with the twins. For those of you that follow the NHL very closely I am sure you are aware he is one hell of a player. He has scored 20+ goals in his last 4 full seasons and again is one of those players rumored to be on the chopping block. He has shown great chemistry with the twins in past international play and is turning 28 in July. Did I mention Dallas needs defencemen

Wayne Simmonds (Philly)- A power forward to his core who scored 28 goals in his first full season in Philly in 2011-2012. He is only 24 and would fit the younger and bigger model which Gillis wants to build. Any deal involving him would probably involve more Pieces coming to Van IMO. Did I mention Philly needs dmen?

Sean Couturier (Philly)- Former #8 pick by the Flyers who is going to be an excellent 2 way center in a couple of years. He has not reached his potential yet but for a team that needs centers so bad he would be the perfect guy to replace Hodgson. He plays a tenacious style and fits the bigger and younger model which Gillis is trying to achieve. He has been rumored in quite a few trade discussions and Philly does need dmen.

Jeff Skinner (Carolina)- A speedy younger winger on the Canes who is only 20 years old. The guy has extensive offensive potential and has shown some of it. I really feel he is on the brink of being one hell of a player.

Thomas Vanek (Buffalo)-Yeah this one is a long shot considering the 7.1 mill dollar salary for Vanek and the fact he will be a ufa in 2014. However, having said that Vanek is quite explosive and scores a lot of goals and assists. Him and Kesler would be dynamic as he could be a perfect winger to set up Kes while also scoring a lot of goals. If we could get a solid young piece a deal maybe worth doing.

In the end, what are your thoughts? What do you think the value of Edler is? Who would you trade for Edler? Or would you trade Edler at all?

I figured because you capitalized "bit" in the topic header, you were going to suggest trading Edler for Grabovski. Couturier and some picks going both ways sounds decent (maybe a prospect or two).

He is worth a heck of a lot more than Eriksson. Eriksson would be a great addition, but not at the expense of Edler. Edler needs to yield a mix of high end prospects, young players and/or a high pick. He's the best asset we could move (not counting a Kesler).

With that being said, why would Carolina give up Skinner? He is a fan favourite there.

Jeff Skinner isn't a fan favorite. Far from it. He has potential, with his flawless skating but lacks any commitment on defense, plays pure offense. Master of Turnovers. Has potential because he's still young, but he's not a guy you want, right now.

I think Detroit could still have interest, and could offer Johan Franzen, which may work with the Twins and with the Wings system, Edler can turn into the defense man he was meant to be.

I say this, because I don't see any of the OP's listed players as options. Bobby Ryan have work ethic issues, Wayne Simmonds wouldn't work because he's too slow, Sean Couturier would end up being a 3rd liner here with his two-way game, Vanek's cap hit makes him impossible to acquire. Eriksson...maybe if it was still Neiwendyk, but pretty sure he got fired last month. No idea why Dallas would trade Eriksson.

Regardless. I'm not a fan of trading Edler. Deal with the real problems in Vancouver first. The Goaltending situation, and bad contracts(Booth and Ballard).

They have an excellent forward mix with some good youngins coming up. The problem is other than Justin Faulk and Ryan Murphy (there top prospect) there isnt really much in terms of defencemen. I also believe there d has been an achilles heel for them and one of the main reasons they continue to miss the playoffs.

I honestly don't think we should trade one of our younger defenceman even though he just had a terrible season. We're trying to get younger not older so a trade with Ballard and maybe bieksa would probably do the trick. In return we get back OFFENSE.

After this season I would honestly trade him for couturier straight up.. I haven't really lost full confidence in edler but after this season it's definitely fading. He's still a good dman but I'm tired of waiting for the superstar to emerge. I'd rather try pull in a real good young centre like couturier than play the old lets go through a million partners before we find a good fit like we did with the twins.
