Anyone know how much AV makes? ... Could this be a factor in MG's decision?

I know they don't publish coach's salaries but is he like a < $2 mill/yr coach or is he in the $2-3.5 mill/yr range.

Reason I pose this is because I think it may be a factor in MG's decision to let him go or not. Afterall, he still has 2 years remaining. This would be like going to your boss and saying I made a $5 million dollar mistake. Not easy.

I think when the CAnadiens hired Jacques Martin, they had to pry him out of a GM (or Management) job in Florida.

If i remeber correctly it was a 4yr/1.5M per deal. At the time he was one the of best paid coach in the NHL I believe.

So for AV i'm guessing < 2M for sure. Probably something around 1 and 1.5M

Just found some posts from HF, don't know how reliable but sounds about right:

Wilson at $1.7m/yr - when he was employed with Leafs.

Murray in LA at $2.65/m/yr for 3 years.

Quennville in Chicago ~$1m/yr

Babcock in Detroit ~$1.5m/yr

So presumably, that's the range. AV should be in this group somewhere so maybe $1.5-2m/yr (with an MG signature 'NTC' of course  ). I over estimated in my opening post.

If AV is bought out then they still pay him normally (rather than a lump sum), if he is then picked up by another team to coach then his old salary will be reduced by how much the new one is so it might not really cost much at all. In other words, he wont pull in 2 salaries to coach in the NHL.

Edit, I don't think he even has to work as a coach, he just needs to work in some capacity for another team.

This team is all about winning. Aquilini doesn't care about how much a coach costs.

gillis believes in the job AV can do and i'm sure he doesn't want to have to down grade because of two bad playoff series that he doesn't blame AV for as much as he blames himself......

How do you know a coaching change would be a downgrade though? There is no way of knowing that until it happens and some time passes. This is something that AV fans cling to like a blanket. But honestly, the message, strategies, and adjustments from AV have been stale for a long time now. Sometimes you have to take a calculated risk and honestly the core group of this team is not going anywhere.

SOMETHING has to change though, that much is certain. The coaching staff is the most obvious place to start.

Have you ever listened to Gillis talk? Do you really get the impression he ever blames himself for anything that goes wrong or even admits he made a mistake?

How much the coach makes doesn't play into it. As others have pointed out, they are liable for the contract until he lands somewhere else and then a buyout is negotiated depending when and what he lands. Whatever amount left over the Canucks are liable for becomes a below the operating line one time only expense.

You talked to Gillis? Downgrade? AV is an average coach that came here at the same time as Roberto Luongo. If he had an average goaltender for his time as canucks coach, he would have been fired a long time ago. How many games did goaltending bail out this pathetic team? Way too many.
