Provost
If we really wanted to re-tool there are a couple of trading partners that have pieces we could use. Dallas is in the same state as us, but worse off and need to make changes. The Rangers will need to move Richards and need to find a top 6 centre. It isn't inconceivable that NYR buy out Richards, and he goes back home to Dallas at a reasonable price. Dallas then has the ability to shed a centre. The following moves would likely require some extra pieces going either way to even up but the main thrust would be: To Dallas: Edler ++ (we would need to add something) To Van: Benn To NYR: Kesler To Van: Boyle Mcilrath Asham Our Roster: FORWARDS Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Alexandre Burrows ($4.500m) David Booth ($4.250m) / Jamie Benn ($5.250m) / Nicklas Jensen ($0.863m) Chris Higgins ($2.500m) / Brian Boyle ($1.700m) / Jannik Hansen ($1.350m) Arron Asham ($1.000m) / Brendan Gaunce ($1.057m) / Zack Kassian ($0.870m) DEFENSEMEN Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m) / Kevin Bieksa ($4.600m) Jason Garrison ($4.600m) / Chris Tanev ($1.500m) Dylan McIlrath ($1.295m) / Keith Ballard ($4.200m) Andrew Alberts ($1.225m) / GOALTENDERS Cory Schneider ($4.000m) Eddie Lack ($0.750m) ------ CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter) (these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion) SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $62,210,000; BONUSES: $1,050,000 CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $3,140,

Apples
Dallas is not moving Jamie Benn. And the Kesler trade is terrible. We're basically getting 4th line players and an unproven rookie.
22sedins33
I always thought it was funny during McIlrath's draft year that they compared him to Derian Hatcher as though it was a good thing just after Hatcher himself had essentially been run out of the league for being too big and slow to keep up with the game. Now, I do think the game has changed enough since then that a player like McIlrath could play effectively but if we're trading away a star player like Kesler (regardless of his injuries), we can likely fetch a better return than a package whose brightest star is a young defenseman who has yet to make a significant impression in the AHL.
