Well guys, that was the scariest two hours of my life....my daughter's on the I-5 on her way to Sasquatch...knew the timing meant she'd be pretty damn close to that area (was frantically Google mapping, etc.). I spent the better part of an hour freaking out, trying to get info, etc.

Best call ever...she wasn't supposed to call (as they were shutting down their cells), but did....they crossed the bridge 25 minutes before it collapsed and she said knew I'd be a wreck until hearing from her.

God, what an awful night...thank God it seems that everyone's ok. Looks like a truck clipped the bridge...wow, if that's all it takes it's rather scary.

Hug your kids, people. :)

You're not the only parent who was frantic with worry, Deb! Talked to 2 others today who had kids heading down just around that time too. They were imagining the worst for hours until they got assured by their kids that they were alright.

Geesh, so glad everyone's alright. The mother of the one guy who was on his car..can't imagine getting the call she got as she watched things unfold.

It is a very helpless feeling until you get the "all clear" sign that everything's ok for sure. I find it amazing that no one was seriously hurt...thankfully!

I saw a surveillance video of the truck that caused the collapse the other night. It appears that the truck was too high to go through that particular span. There was a pilot car with a whiplike antenna which was supposed to let the driver know if the span was too low, but for reasons unknown, the warning was not given to the truck driver.

I'm not an engineering expert, (maybe Ron could chime in) but it looks like the top part of the bridge was severed, putting all of the strain of the truck's load on the bridge deck. My guess is that without the added support from the upper bridge section, the deck can't hold the amount of weight that it's rated for...

BTW: Let me add my best wishes as well Deb. As a father of three teenage girls, I can relate.
