Canucks granted permission to talk to Eakins

Actually, I remember when Carlyle was hired by Anaheim because they had to ask the Canucks for permission to talk to him since he was coaching the Moose back then. Back then, Carlyle's reputation in the AHL was similar to what Eakins's is now.

Well, I suppose it depends on what your definition of experience is. Eakins had a decent share of games but did bounce around quite a bit. But if you look at the remaining coaches in the playoffs... Bylsma bounced between the NHL and the minors, Julien played 14 NHL games, McLellan played 5, and Babcock never played in the NHL. The only two who were NHL regulars were Quenneville and Sutter, and neither were superstars.

I don't think NHL experience matters as much as hockey experience in general, and Eakins has a ton.

They're is a pretty big difference between assistant coach and a coach in the AHL. Look at the big name coachs around the league, example :Joel Quenneville he was an assistant coach, now is a great NHL coach. Eakins is in the AHL for a reason.

Last six winners of the Jack Adams:

Hitchcock - coached in the IHL

Bylsma - coached in the AHL

Tippett - coached in the IHL

Julien - coached in the AHL

Boudreau - coached in the AHL

Vigneault - coached in the AHL

You're right, I should've mentioned the last 'x' Stanley Cup winning coaches, because its the exact same story. Almost every single one has coached at a level below the NHL before becoming an NHL coach.

Also, your argument is completely invalid because both Eakins and Quenneville (your singular example) coached in the AHL and as an NHL assistant before becoming an NHL coach. Eakins being an AHL coach is no knock on him, its a plus that he's learning to work his way up and having success at the minor league level first.

Yea he was a top AHL coach for the Moose, but I doubt many people were throwing his name around at the time for a head coaching position.

I wonder how different things would have been if we chose Carlyle and the Ducks chose AV...

Eakins is the most likely AHL coach to get an NHL position for a reason though. I don`t think it`s just Toronto hype. The Marlies have played very well under him, and from watching him being interviewed he seems like a very smart well spoken guy. And he looks genuinely pissed off after a loss, as opposed to AV who seemed to just shrug them off and make excuses.
