[Proposal] VAN - MIN - PHX

Recommended Posts

Trying to be creative here. Might be a bit complicated.

I've read MIN might be looking to but-out Heatley, are interested in a top 4 D and a top 2 C. PHX is looking for scoring but cash strapped.

Basically VAN pays $2.5m* (see explanation below), trades Ballard and negotiating rights to pending UFAs to move up 12 spots in the in the draft.

To MIN: Ballard, Roy (rights)

To PHX: Heatley*, Raymond (rights), VAN 1st (24th)

To VAN: PHX 1st (12th)

*VAN retains 1/2 of Heatley's $5m actual salary, PHX gets $7.5m cap hit

Ohhh my head hurts....ok so van gets nothing but a pick out of this and eats a 2.5 million cap hit for years while still having to pay the ELC for this draft pick while still being cap strapped to signt he other what, 9 players to round out the roster with no space at all. Possible trade that would work in theory....if we had the cap space

Not only can we not retain any part of a player's salary that wasn't ours to begin with, the % of cap and salary retained must be equal.

I wouldn't do it even if we could just to move up 12 spots in the draft. I'd rather trade the rights to Roy and Raymond for 5th/6th/7th round picks, move Ballard for a 3rd/4th/5th and keep our 24th overall for ourselves.

Not bad but PHX wins this trade.... They are going to have to give up more than just the 12th overall pick to justify what they are getting back. While Heatley is getting old, he is still a solid top six player in my opinion, plus they get Raymond who has potential to be a solid point-producer and a pick only 11 spots deeper in a deep draft. Yotes win this deal, both MIN and VAN lose even though we dump our garbage which I like.

Solid for us and Phoenix. And I'm thinking it's solid for Minny as well since they get some cap relief were they could upgrade on certain positions (defense). Not to mention they have guys like Zucker and Coyle who could easily replace Heatley if not this year then certainly in the next 2-3 years.

Nice job!

How does Phoenix win this trade? Raymond is a UFA at the end of the season, if the Yotes want him, they can sign him for free. Heatley + 24 for 12 is an awful deal for the Coyotes.

Minny also says no, they can just compliance buyout Heatley and not have to take the cap dump in Ballard.

Appreciate the response.

I would think in this case Heatley is traded to VAN then to PHX. So, however brief 100% of that contract is VAN's.

But you are correct in that VAN has to keep 50% of the cap hit too. Which I misunderstood. But still considering it's less than Ballard's hit and 1 year less, i still think there still may be a deal in there somewhere. In which case the 1st going to PHX would be changed to a lower pick ie. 3rd.

As you have already stated you wouldn't do it. I think I might. As I'd rather move up slightly in the 1st round vs quantity in the later rounds for this draft and don't think the negotiation rights will bring back anything on their own.
