Dilly Canuck
To VAN: F Wayne Simmonds ($4M annual cap hit, age 24) To PHI: D Alex Edler ($5M annual cap hit, age 27) Top 6 forward for a top 4 defensemen. I would say Simmer's and Eddie's trade value is about equal but personally I would say Eddie's value is a little higher, however, the cap differential and age make it about even. Sedin - Sedin - Burrows Booth - Kesler - Simmonds Higgins - XXXX - Hansen Sestito - XXXX - Kassian Hamhuis - Bieksa Garrison - Tanev XXXX - Corrado Our defense looks a little suspect but they should get the job done defensively, especially if we go out and sign a Fistric, Clitsome, Lydman type defenseman on July 5th. This trade bodes well for our young defensemen too because with Edler gone, there is advancement opportunities(in case you didn't know we have a lot of prospective defensemen). Possible all Canadian defense which is cool. No more horrible drop passes on the powerplay haha. Rumors at the deadline were swirling that the Flyers were going after Yandle but the price was too high, so why wouldn't they be intrested in Edler who has a better cap hit and has produced similar if not better numbers than Yandle? Personally I don't think the Flyers need another big cap hit defenseman(this deal would give them 7 defensemen with cap hits of $3.5M or higher), but Holmgren seems to think otherwise... Warhippy
With the Flyers desperate for D-men I think there is a way to get more out of them in a package deal. In all honesty, Simmonds is a player I would covet on the team but the equality of that trade is heavily in Philli's favour, even with the million cap difference. All in all a decent hockey trade, but again...maybe if there was a 2nd rounder thrown in or we threw in another piece for another player or pick. There have been a few Van Phi threads around, that address just that
Smiley2051
I would love Simmonds on our roster forsure. The only problem I have with him is where do we put him? Canucks already have Kass and Burr playing the role of top 6 grinder/net presence with skill (is that what we call them? lol), cause that's really where Kass needs to be, the top 6. Simmonds is great, but his type of game is already on this team. If Eddie is traded (which I dont think he will) and going to PHI, Gillis should try to corral Couturier+. Warhippy
In retrospect one has to wonder with the knowledge of NYI needing Defensive help, especially Left Shooting defensive help if we couldn't just get some solid return back going to long island instead

Warhippy
Kyle Oksposo would be the Isles closest equivalent to Simmonds, but him alone straight up for Edler would not be great value for us. Perhaps a package deal for Edler?

Dilly Canuck
If we get into package value inevitably we get into luongo edler draft picks and dipietro neiderietter martin nelson or de haan. For me I don't think Gillis has the stones for something like that.
Magikal
I wonder if we could pull off something like Edler and Raymonds rights for Simmonds and Gustaffson. We might need to throw in a pick or something...

Baka
Value wise it is pretty even. As far as squeezing more out of it I find it unlikely. Edler is not the only defenseman available, milking the price will likely just push Philly towards going for another defenseman and throwing in random things like draft picks and Raymonds rights isn't going to make it anymore appealing. Why give up more assets for stuff you don't need? Realistically Philly is looking to make an immediate cup run. I find it more practical that they will end up moving prospects and draft picks for a defender instead of players like Simmonds who aren't on any hot seat and moving someone like him reshapes the entire aspect of the Flyers powerplay which was still the #3 ranked one in the NHL and #6 the year before while being only #16 the year before Simmonds arrived. I would avoid moving players like him unless I had to. I would be more inclined (my personal opinion) to move a higher price if it was players/prospects/picks that weren't reshaping the core of the team. In other words if PHX was willing to avoid the core players I would not mind giving up a steeper price for Yandle As far as Gustafsson's value goes he is being undervalued here. Philly is hardly going to just throw him in. He really started to look good at the end of the season and outplayed literally all of the other defenders. The final month of the season he played 13 games had 3 goals (6 points) was a +7 and he was logging an average of 22:09 minutes a game. Plus he is still on a rookie contract and less than a 1 mill cap hit which is valuable to Philly given the cap tightness. I simply wouldn't trade him. He is showing a promising flare and may break out next year and no one will offer a remotely impressive return for him so no reason to move him. Apples
Not a bad trade, seems pretty even for both sides. Simmonds could be the next Anson Carter with the Sedins
Blömqvist
I would rather trade Edler for a game breaker or potential game breaker than a complementary player. Simmonds could be the next Anson Carter with the Sedins but what about without? Guys like Bobby Ryan, Loui Eriksson, and, with potential, Sean Couturier.
