Sydney Leroux: Racial Abuse from 2012 Vancouver Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

What is the difference between what she did and taking the "high road"? I mean tangible difference. So far as I can tell, the only thing different would be lack of all these Canadian panties that have been knotted as a result.

I'm typically the high road type myself, but I'm seriously struggling to see what she did wrong. Shushing the crowd that's been booing her must've felt satisfying.

Somehow I doubt people were "chanting" racial slurs. She's likely just upset that Canadians have turned against her.

Welcome to professional sports though. Fans are gonna say that stuff anywhere. Doesn't make it right, but the sooner she accepts that, the better off she'll be.

And her goal celebration was just dumb. A 3-0 goal in a friendly doesn't need a celebration like that. I can see why she chose to play for the US though. #noclass.

Yes, have pride in representing a country that is a shining beacon all other countries aspire to be and as such is totally universally loved.

I get being proud of where you're from but when it becomes patriotism? Sidney pls.

Watch the video, she's not from the US shes states over and over that she's from vancouver and vancouver is home. and thats for a US tv spot not a canadian one. She learned her craft in canada, she was trained and given international exposure by soccer canada. Shes a mercenary that wanted an easier road to a gold on a stacked team. Whatever.. but no need to be a douche about it and act like you are a proud american when by her own words she's not. Soccer canada gave her opportunity and instead of helping canadian soccer win something she went for the sure thing.. she might as well have just bought herself the medal.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The biggest issue that I have with Leroux is that she USED the CSA and the U-19 Canadian team as a launchpad to get to the USWNT. Time and money were spent on her, precious resources that could have been spent on another player. Her intention was to play represent the States all along and I think what she did was dishonest.

In the case of Sesselmann, LeBlanc, Franko (from about 10 years ago...), these are women that HAD NOT played for the USA in any U19 or U-20 games. I think once you do something like that, you should be "locked in" for that country,

And regarding the racial abuse she's getting. Seriously, these people need to grow up. Do they think that insulting her will change her mind? Not that she can ever play for Canada again.... I thought her celebration was antagonizing and overdone considering it was a 3-0 game, AND it was in the what...93rd minute? But as fans, if we're going to boo the crap out of her, we should be able to handle a bit of shushing.

EDIT:

After Leroux's tweet about getting racial chants, a TON of American fans started saying they could "hear it on TV". So yeah..apparently Booing and calling her Judas is now racist now. Even when she backtracked on her statement, these guys kept insisting they heard it.

I was at a few of those games in Vancouver close to the southsider section and I heard no racial slurrs. It sounds like she's making it up. I just can't imagine them chanting racial slurrs when the Canadian team has black people on it. I guess I don't really know though.

It's called knowing what side your bread is buttered on.

Simply put, this city and region treats like garbage if you're not of an approved ethnic group so its natural that she'd want to get on where she fits in.

?

Are you suggesting that people in the Lower Mainland (and Canada in general) are racist towards African Americans/Canadians?

Because then you'd need to explain why she still calls Vancouver home.

I'm pretty sure she chose the USA because well..look at who her role model growing up would have been? Mia Hamm, Michelle Akers, Julie Foudy, Brandi Chastain? These women were household names in the 90s. Now compare them to the players Canada had: Charmaine Hooper, Andrea Neil, Silvana Burtini? Great women, and talented athletes but not nearly as big as the US players. Also, consider her chances of success as past of the US team vs. Canadian team. USA challenges to win every tournament they enter. Canada, though a good team, is not on the same level as the States are.

Hopefully with the rise in popularity and media attention for the Canadian team now, more kids will grow up dreaming of representing Canada instead of whatever country their parents are from.

Are you referring to celebrities and athletes?

If you are referring to 'average' people, then you need to understand the purpose - as its a way to control and access the information YOU want on a real time basis. As well as connect you with like-minded people.
