A couple of points FYI. If this trade happens:

The best case scenario for VAN is if Richards can bounce back. I believe he will, I believe him when he says he had an off year due to the shortened season and I think could be a very good fit. It's a matter of opinion, I can understand if you disagree.

The worst case scenario for VAN is if doesn't rebound AND refuses to retire. An amnesty buy-out next season would total $27m. But I don't believe a buy-out would happen. He can still be traded since cap and salary can be retained. Especially in the last 3 years in his contract where his actually salary would be $1m/year which makes him valuable to lower spending teams.

The worst case scenario for NYR is if he retires. NY would be penalized the full amount in cap savings ($5.6m for the last 3 years of his contract). VAN does not get penalized if he retires. It is conceivable that should Richards decline, the Rangers will want him back even if it's to bury him in the minors because of this new rule.
