Trade Burrows because it makes sense

Recommended Posts

One of the most significant resets in Canucks history occurred in 2006 when General Manager Dave Nonis fired Marc Crawford and traded Todd Bertuzzi while moving towards a defensive style with Alain Vigneault. Bertuzzi was dealt for a variety of reasons which have been rehashed on these boards for the past 7 years. Amongst the biggest besides the fact he punched Steve Moore and seemingly couldn't move on from that was the fact he was a Crawford guy and the Canucks needed a change in the locker room.

Fast forward eight seasons later. The Canucks fired Crawfords successor a couple of weeks ago and are looking to bring in change. Perhaps one of the most significant transactions on the ice which could faciliate change is the trading of Alex Burrows. Like Bertuzzi, Burrows is a guy favoured by his fired coach. Vigneault gave Burrows a chance to play significant minutes with Ryan Kesler and then the Sedin twins. His faith paid off as Burrows scored 25+ goals in each full season with the twins. Burrows also saved Alain Vigneaults job twice. Once in an overtime win against Carolina while the Canucks were mired in an eight game losing skid and then again in 2011 when the Canucks were on the verge of the biggest choke job in the playoffs against the Blackhawks. Burrows has been and forever will be a Vigneault guy. There is nothing wrong with having a favorite coach but often times it is best to trade a player who is reflective of an old coach just to truly change the culture of the team.

However, the reasons to trade Burrows do not end with him being a Vigneault guy. Perhaps the biggest reason is that it would allow forward Zack Kassian to play with the twins. Kassian looked his best with the Sedins and seems to be a perfect fit for them. He is also much more physical than Burrows and could play the role of Sedin protector when needed. Recall, the Canucks traded Bertuzzi for Luongo when the team wanted to play more defensively. By trading Burrows, the Canucks would be able to fit with the bigger younger model which GM Mike Gillis preached at his year end press conference. Another reason to trade Burrows is the fact that moving him would free 4 million and the fact he could yield a younger quality player who is cheaper. There will always be a market for guys who can score and play sound defensively. As Burrows has shown over time, he does both. Imagine someone such as Frans Nielsen on the Canucks. Vancouver would not only get younger by putting Kassian on the top line but would also address there desperate need for a third line centre. Inevitably, Mike Gillis will have to make some tough decisions this summer and dealing Burrows would be amongst the toughest considering the heart hustle and desire which he has shown. Alex has been a fan favourite for years and he would be missed by majority of Canuck nation including yours truly. However, sometimes a move just makes sense and trading Burrows is one of those moves.

At 4 million a year for 4 seasons and 32 years of age he can be replaced to some degree by Zack Kassian who is significantly younger and costs a lot less money. Yeah the intangible factors will not all be replaced but in a year where Booth will not be bought out because he is injured and Aquilini seemingly doesnt want to buy out Ballard here is a legitimate option to cut salary while also doing everything else MG preached at his year end presser.

Well, if the Canucks really wanted to put Kassian on the first line, they could move Burrows down to the second because he has amazing chemistry with Kesler. I don't see the point of trading a player who has chemistry with both the first and second line centre is. How does "Kassian needs icetime" justify trading such a versatile player? If Kassian is good enough for the first line, he can prove it to us by scoring 30+ goals.

Burrows has already proven that he is in the upper echelon of NHL forwards. He has amazing defensive skills and above average offensive prowess. I'd argue that his offensive instinct is third on the team (behind the Sedin twins).

Trading Burrows won't just affect our offence. Our defence and PK units will be struck hard. Burrows is a staple on the PK unit and is trusted enough to play on 5 on 3 situations.

In short, I don't think Burrow's role on the team can be replaced.

Oh so that's why we're trading Luongo right? Not because of everything else, just the fact that he's a Vigneault boy. Gotcha.

Seriously though, Burrows has been a great player for our team and has shown no reason to trade him. He just signed an extension too after taking a massive pay cut. He's not going to be traded, thankfully.

I'll agree to the extent that Elder and Burrows' raises are going to significantly cuff us for a little while in terms of the salary cap. If it is the case that we can't get a return for Ballard/Booth and are looking at a buyout, perhaps the more economical option is to deal one of Edler or Burrows and get a decent return to keep us under the cap, rather than a buyout which gives us nothing.

I however, can't see Burrows dealt, he means too much to this team. He will begin his decline too, as every forward does in their mid 30s, but I think we as fans should just accept that his new contract is retroactive pay for his previous contract sacrifice.

Anyway, the option to trade Elder or Burrows is quickly closing, as I believe they both receive NTCs on their next deal (Elder for sure does), leaving a very small window from now till early July when it kicks in.

Burrows is the only one on the team keeping us alive. The Canucks will have zero pulse without Burrows, he's the one guy you can count on to play with heart game in and game out.

He's made it this far because of it. He deserves to stay as much if not more than anyone else on the team. Love this guy.
