My idea for a successful off season

Recommended Posts

MG needs to keep this team competitive while piling up prospects for the future of the team.

This means supplementing our core players with good prospects.

In my opinion this means grabbing a major defensive asset in Seth Jones (most likely 1st overall this year) and a major asset down the centre in Sean Couturier.

----

From Van:

Edler + Schroeder (If not enough add our 1st)

From Col:

1st overall pick

-----

From Van:

Kevin Bieksa/Dan Hamhuis

From Philadelphia:

Sean Couturier

These moves give us depth down the centre we'll have a 3C with great potential to be 1C later in his career and a replacement 3C in Gaunce when the Sedins retire. Why Seth Jones? Because franchise defence men are essential to winning the Stanley Cup and the team that gets Seth Jones practically gets a franchise defence man.

The downside to these trades is of course how our defence core will be less solid come next year. One thing we have have to remember though is that we still have Keith Ballard, a player that has been under utilized under Vigneault. With Vignealt gone, Ballard may be able to find himself and re stabilize our D core and we won't have to trade him for a bag of pucks. There is much more value in Ballard than a lot of people think and the truth is that Ballard has what it takes to be a top 4 defence man.

If the defensive core still isn't stable enough afterwards, we can always trade Roberto Luongo to NYI or Toronto for a top 4 defence man + pick

Something like

Luongo for Matt Donovan + pick

"hey, Sherm? Ya this is gillis. I hear you are going to draft a generational defenseman that only comes around once every ten or fifteen years. So I am going to save you the trouble by giving you a top 2 with a questionable back and moderate cap hit, an undersized poor draft pick of a center and a pick waaaayyyyyy later in the 1st round. Sherm? hello? Sherman did you hang up on me?"
