Hunter Shinkaruk | C/W

Shink looks great but I also love Grenier's size and he is putting up points along with Shink. That shot of him infront of the Chicago net

starring down a defender was classic.

I want their Calder run to be long and tough. Losing a couple to Chicago won't be the end of the day. A Calder Cup win is sure to graduate a couple of players to the Canucks.

Conacher, Shinkaruk, Corrado, Baertschi, Clendening, and possibly Markstrom?

JV is the prime example of a shiny new prospect that would satisfy CDC's wet dreams should he slot into the Canucks line up despite being VERY raw and still needing a lot of development.

Not just a wet dream but based on Benning's own comments, that Jake may well make the roster next season. He will determine whether his development is best served in junior or the NHL.

All you need to do is look at Edmonton to see how rushing a prospect works out in the end.

Difference being Edmonton brought theirs in right after their drafts, and into a losing atmosphere onto a losing team lacking veteran leadership. Vancouver's had no less than three rookies this season, and all have shown visible improvement over the year. Baertschi is technically no longer a rookie, but he and Clendening make the team this Fall after several years developing in the AHL, and one or two others may as well.

I mean cmon now its like I'm advocating throwing Virtanen in the fire.

He can develop at the NHL level on a 4th line role like Horvat and gradually earn more minutes if NHL ready as stated Virtanen has worked on his d game and would be an upgrade even on Kenins right now.

They gotta get bigger. Virtanen will have every chance to make the team next year. If he looks comfortable I think you keep him.

This as Linden said, is a big summer for Virtanen to prove he is more than just physically ready to make the jump.

What? Physicality and speed?

JV isn't even dominant in the WHL... Heck, he's not even the best forward on his team. Horvat on the other hand was just as good and showed an immense amount of maturity and leadership AND STILL didn't slot into the Canucks until he was 19.

JV is the prime example of a shiny new prospect that would satisfy CDC's wet dreams should he slot into the Canucks line up despite being VERY raw and still needing a lot of development. Worse yet, you say that he NEEDS to make the team next year over a guy who's shown tremendous work ethic and poise (as well as production) to get where he's at, as well as two average yet seasoned pros.

All you need to do is look at Edmonton to see how rushing a prospect works out in the end.

The Oilers situation is completely different than here. Edmonton had little if not none of the veteran presence the Canucks have. Hall, Eberle and the Nuge were thrown into a locker room void of veteran leaders. They had to rely on themselves to learn how to be NHL players and that more than anything is the reason for their recent struggles

The Oilers had veterans and still have some now. The reason why they struggled is cause they were tossed onto the top line without proper development and completely rushed. That and being part of a crap team and a loser environment didnt help either.

I dont think Virt is the type of player who would benefit from developing on the 4th line. At least not now with how young he is, maybe later when he has gotten all he can out of the A then it would make sense. I'd rather he got top line minutes in the A or Junior than rush him onto our roster and have him play 8 a night. Only reason that worked well with Bo is because hes exactly the type of player for that, and because hes awesome.

I think CDC is hinging on that remark by Benning (which I suspect was used more to please the masses) to hold on to the hope of Virtanen possibly suiting up for the Canucks next year.

I don't think he's the kind of player to develop playing less than 10 minutes a night on the fourth line. HIs characteristics and attributes aren't well suited for that imo.

And as much as people think that NHL time can only be good for him, there have been prospects which have been ruined by being rushed into the NHL too soon.

guntix;

Positive talk about Virtanen is standard hype. As you suggest Virtanen has more to do in the WHL with 1st line TOI.

Horvat centers a very effective 4th line this past year and the assumption becomes that all future 4th lines can do the same thing. It is not a given.

Why not? He's a bigger, more skilled version of Kenins. If he's actually nhl ready, there's no reason he couldn't play in a bottom 6 role.

That said, I'm guessing it's back to junior as there's too much depth in front of him.

With his late push think there is any chance he beats out sven for 2cnd line C? Bo will most likely push for it although it's not up to him haha. I can see BO and hunter having wicked chemistry

lolwut? Neither Hunter or Sven play centre.

If you mean 2nd line wing then the short answer is no. In all likelihood Shinkaruk will spend next year in Utica maybe with a few call ups. While Sven will probably have a full time spot with the Canucks, due to his waiver eligibility.

Shinkaruk coming on so strong lately is awesome to see though. Vancouver could really use a kid of his potential in a few years.

Baetrschi is guaranteed a roster spot next October, Shinkaruk how ever not so much, no matter how hot he may be. I don't see any sign with Baertschi special status especially when you put him alongside of players such as Bennett or Monahan.... you can see why Calgary moved him out IMO

Bo and Hunter DO have wicked chemistry! It's probably a bit of hype based on a small sample size but they were awesome two seasons ago in pre-season if you'll recall. Shink was more impressive than Bo in my opinion.

I feel like that wasn't the first time they'd played together as well, but can't remember what would have been off the top of my head.

Bo has gotten so much faster too. Shinkaruk and Bo have the makings of a very good number 1 line if Shinkaruk can make the jump to the NHL which I am sure he can.

I completely forgot! Hunter was lighting it up, it's too bad about the injury. Could something like this work?

sedin sedin jenson

shinkaruk horvat vrbata

Baertschi bonino burrows

dorsett gaunce Virtanen/Kass
