No I didn't. He said that, not the coaches.

And the sentence after:

It's sounds to me like he's saying, "I'll take what they teach me, but that's not really my game."

Was still part of the article. Nowadays you simply can't have one dimension guys in the game and Hunter understands that.

Sounds to me like he's fine with sacrificing bits of his game (i.e. do less of it) for the price of making the NHL.

I don't think Green is trying to mould him into a bottom 6 player like we're trying to do with Jensen.

"I’ll never cut it out completely because that’s why I play the game"

Don't see the point in drafting someone for the skills they have, and then telling them to change the thing that makes them great. Defense is important, but turning him into a 2 way player or grinder wont help

Detroit are the masters at developing players defensive games while also encouraging creativity.

It's a fine line between developing 200 foot players while not taking away from the skills that make them the players they are.

If you watched Hunter play in Utica last you it was obvious that he didn't have the skating to play a skill game. There were two things that you could depend on every time he had the puck.

1) Skate the puck wide while not looking for a teammate and being rubbed off the puck by the defender that he wasn't able to stake around.

2) Try to score from behind the net on a wrap around which he did game after game with zero goals being generated from it.

If Hunter kept doing the things that he was doing all season long he wouldn't have stayed in the lineup or would have been sent down to the ECHL. He was an ineffective player due to his lack of strength and quickness. If he never had the hip condition and surgery maybe he could have come to Utica last season and dominated based on his skill level alone. But after surgery he needed to change his game just to stay in the lineup.

It's easy to make a blanket statement about drafting skill players and then changing their game but each player must be looked at individually. Certainly in Hunter's case last year he would not be able to stay in the lineup as an offensive skill player alone.

I think you have to write off last season because of the injury and surgery. Treat this year as his first pro season and see how he performs.

What's your opinion on his progression in the later half of the season when he started to come on more offensively?

The biggest difference was that he stopped trying to do everything himself. He started passing the puck earlier on zone entries and then getting open for a return pass instead of skating into no mans land and loosing possession. Plus he became more adept at playing a hard forechcking game.

Hunter not unlike other young players was often one or two step forward followed but another step back. Just when he would make some progress he would revert back to the I can do everything myself mentality with the same results as early in the season and Green would sit him for a game and then Hunter would usually respond with solid games right after.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hunter looks like he is packing on a few pounds... Excited to see what he does this season. You can definitely tell he wants it.

HS still looks like he could barely beat out Sam Bennet in chin ups...maybe he is a bit bigger in the shoulders...maybe.

The thing is Sam seems to do just fine at that size and strength...go figure.

Really?

He looks trim and solid in the core. But...

I look at that pick, look at his guns, or lack thereof & wonder how seriously he takes the whole thing?

I don't know, but is the picture for real? The heads all look too big, especially Hunter's.

I think I've said it before (maybe even in this thread) that I saw Hunter play before the surgery but while he was still trying to make team Canada.

You could tell he was off a little but everything still ran through him offensively. I imagine it would be hard adjusting to the higher level and being more of 'a' piece than 'the' piece.

He looks like an ectomorph. It's hard for them to gain size around that age, especially when you're skating so much and are as active as they are.

He probably wont pack on much more size for atleast another year or 2.

His dad is tall but looks like he has slight build as well.

You do realize Sam couldn't do chin ups because of the buggered up shoulder he never told anyone about and that subsequently needed surgery right?
