After Period 1

Cassels: 1 assist, +1, 1 minor penalty

- The majority of play has been controlled by the Otters.

- Cassels and Co. have kept McDavid off the scoresheet but #97 had about 5-6 Grade A scoring opportunities.

- Cassels, himself, has been decent in his role but that line -- well, the whole team for that matter -- hasn't had a whole lot of offensive-zone time... though that's not the top line's main priority so that's not a huge concern. Still, they have the lone Oshawa goal that came a half minute after the Erie goal. It was a great goal by Hunter Smith.

- Cassels also took a hard hit early in the game, went down to the dressing room during a commercial break, but hasn't missed a shift in the game. He was also called for playing the puck with his hand off of a faceoff. McDavid had an amazing scoring chance on the ensuing Erie power play but he missed high. Side note: It was interesting to see Kyle Petit out with the 2nd unit power play for the Otters...

Question: To whom will the credit go when Cole C. becomes a legitimate, belligerent, serviceable 2/3 center option for the Canucks in a few years ? It does raise the whole Nature vrs Nurture debate and at least suggests that when a team drafts players the program (francise, league, association)they are playing in during their formative or draft eligible years must hold equal importance to any natural physical measure one might see on the ice in any random minute during any random game. Young players must be "cooked" right to reach their potential and I think Cole is a prime example of a young guy with a pedigree and a coach and team that have been able to harness his latent skills and turn him into the prospect we see now. In retrospect it seems like such a no brainer that this was going to be the end result. If you stayed with me, thanks!
