Clinch16
yes and part of trading in a cap world involves understanding the cap hit/value of the player to 'spend efficiently' as you said. neither of those players booth or ballard are efficient spends we are in a bind right now bc of MG's poor spending. After reading all of your massive walls of text in 2 different threads this morning it's clear you are no longer a fan of the team. You say you've been a fan for 25 years, yet you sarcastically call others "son". I've been a fan for all 43 years, son, and you come off as being a complete arsehole in some of your arguments. When someone else speculates that maybe, possible, potentially, one of our prospects might actually succeed in becoming a good player and an integral part of the team, you turn around and "speculate" that they are so wrong that they need further ridicule from your amazing stats prowess and witty conjecture. Why not just pack it in then? Find a different team if you don't like this teams management. Remember they don't owe you anything and this is not "your" team as far as they're concerned. Are you a season ticket holder? (who therefore could argue that you have a voice) or are you just some google jockey throwing stats around and whining because you spent all your paper route money on a cheap Tshirt and knock off Canucks hat. Try to enjoy the game of hockey instead of being so obsessed with the things you can't control. You can go out and buy a nice new ride and then enjoy driving it around or you can leave it in the garage with the hood up so you can go in every day and make 1000 word posts on why the the vehicle manufacturer and any mechanic who might happen to work on it in the future are so completely incompetent. Excellent post .. some folks were just born to find fault, and they lash out at anyone who disagree's with them .. Slot reminds me of a Leafs fan .. I was a Canuck fan before they were in the NHL .. folks new to the soap opera that is the NHL under Bettman's watch require instant gratification or they want to break their toys .. HockeyCanada90
1. MG has not shown he is good at making trades 2. Most if not all of those vets have NTC's 3. If we're moving vets at the deadline, clearly we're out of the playoffs. Why not just gut the team at the draft then and start over? 4. People are upset because we're getting a team that is stuck in the middle, won't win now and isn't preparing to win in the future. Yet Acquilini wants to raise ticket prices? lol 1 your completely wrong: ehrhoff, hoggins, lappierre all great trades. 3&4 because this team Isn't necessarily stuck in the middle. We're two solid rookies from being a solid team

Westcoasting
Ok.. the draft was the deepest since '03. Horvat was ranked as high as 4th by some GM's. Scored 16 goals in 21 games to get the OHL MVP. I don't know if it's a guarantee he'll be comparable to a Toews or Bergeron or whatever but he will be a heck of a hockey player. I agree we could've also gotten atleast a roster player in return as well. But keep in mind that we got a steal at #9. Schneider may have been our franchise goalie, but after Luo, we still have Lack+Eriksson. It won't affect our team much, that is a guarantee. Derek Roy was also a OHL playoff mvp and a Memorial Cup mvp with 32 points in 21 games.... it's too early to tell what will happen with draft picks. Edlerberry
Lol. Multiple centre's can play, whereas in a game there is ony one goalie. Also, have you considered what Horvat could turn out to be? Perhaps a Toews? Bergeron? perhaps a Toews? LLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLL

Not every trade works out. Ballard was acquired prior to Hamhuis. Meaning the trade was to fill a need and it wasn't particularly expensive when looking at it without the hindsight goggles. A waiver eligible prospect with no hope of making the team (our entire top 6 coming off a career year), a bottom end 1st rounder (typically 2+ years away from the NHL), and a cap dump. Not exactly a high price for a top four defender. But signing Hamhuis changed things and Ballard simply couldn't adapt to a bottom pair role. Booth came cheap as well in the grand scheme of things. He was a gamble that hasn't truly paid off but even if he can stay reasonably healthy he could still pay dividends. Where Gillis made his mistakes was not moving Lou last summer for whatever he could get. You're not in a position of bargaining power when player with a ntc wants out and is picky about where he's goes. With a new cba coming that the biggest demand would cause the cap to go down, waiting wasn't going to improve the trade landscape. It would in fact reduce our bargaining position as we would be in even greater need to move him. Ballard should have been shopped last summer also for whatever he could get or put through waivers. These two moves last summer would have opened up $9.5m in cap space that could have been much better used. Not to mention avoiding the year long goalie controversy being a distraction. In the end he traded the wrong goalie for less than he was worth and kept the goalie that has been unhappy here for more than a year.
SamJamIam
Kyle Beach says hello drafted players aren't sure things buddy, that's my point Everyone on this site thinks every one of our players in our system is going to be a stud Jensen will score 40 Kassian will become Lucic Shinkaruk is a steal and is Patrick Kane 2.0 Horvat is Bergeron on and on folks...we'll be lucky if 1 of those 4 turns into a solid 1/2 line player, that's the point we had certainty of a star, traded it for a what if...that's never a good deal Mods will be rid of him soon. Smashian Kassian
it was sarcasm the guy called a goalie who will likely be on the US Olympic team a 'spare' goalie please don't start some ridiculous argument that what we got in return for a future vezina winner was his worth I don't think it was completely fair value either, but at the same time I don't think it was ridiculously far off. And also, this not getting fair return for a goalie is not exclusive to us, Philly didn't, LA didn't, FLA didn't when they traded Roberto, exc. Goalies historically don't get the same marquee return, thats just the fact of the matter. And I can't believe you are even disputing the fact that we had to get rid of a goalie. (which is what he was what he was getting at with his "spare goalie" remark) We had 2 elite goalies, the saga had gone on long enough.

He's clearly behind Quick and Anderson and one can argue that Miller despite his recent poor year is still ahead on the US goalie depth chart. He's a good goalie but he hasn't even carried a team as a clear #1 for a full season. We took a "spare" asset and turned it into a quality pick to add some youth over the next few years to an aging core. Sounds like a solid plan to me. mbal23
I can't remember who it is but they signed on friday and the NTC was written so at the start of each year the plaer give a list of 10 teams he wont waive is NTC for. Mg should use that more often if he wants to give players NTC as incentive to sign here
