[Rumour] Leafs still looking for top-four defenseman

Leafs still looking for top-four defenseman:

Having solidified their forward corps, the Maple Leafs are now shifting their focus to their blueline, where they'd like to add a top-four defenseman.

Toronto GM Dave Nonis has been scouring the trade market and is likely to go in that direction if he makes a move on defense.

It has been widely reported that the Leafs are willing to move one of their defensemen as part of a package for an upgrade on the blueline.

John-Michael Liles and Cody Franson, a restricted free agent, have seen their names swirl around the rumor mill, but so far the Leafs haven't been able to come to terms on a trade.

Former Winnipeg Jets defenseman Ron Hainsey and former Edmonton Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney are still available in the free agent market, but the Leafs aren't believed to be interested in either of them.

Meanwhile, while his attention is on the defense, Nonis is looking to add a third-line winger, and might obtain one via free agency.

Coburn is likely off the market for now. When he was on the block Philadelphia had numerous chances to move him if they really wanted to get rid of him but they didn't (rumor was they weren't jumping at the idea of moving Coburn over Meszaros). Since then they have filled the roster and addressed what they wanted while remaining just under the cap.

Coburn will start the season with Philly. If a big hole emerges they may dangle him again to address it but as of now they have no reason to trade him after getting Lecavalier to round the top 6, Emery to duel for goalie, and with the FA frenzy basically over dumping him for picks or prospects won't allow them to go after any wanted defenders.
