[Report] Canucks out on Blum, still chasing Fistric

Recommended Posts

4.5ish M left to sign some defencemen.

2M for Tanev.

1M for Alberts

1.5M for Fistric

Hamhuis - Bieksa

Edler - Garrison

Tanev - Fistric

Alberts

Weber

That's the sort of defensive depth we need. That way, we can sustain 2 injuries to our top-4 and be fine. If we don't sign Alberts or Fistric, look what happens if say Hamhuis and Edler get injuries:

Bieksa - Garrison

Tanev - Weber

I'd be happy with either of these guys.

Fistric is still improving - he's only 27, and he's actually not a bad skater for his size - he's also a hard worker, so if anything, it might not hurt to shed a little bit of his size in favour of mobility - he'd still be huge and possibly even better equipped to land all those big hits. His potential to continue to improve is really tempting, especially considering his underlying numbers over the past two seasons.

I've been impressed by Alberts' ability to improve despite not playing steadily in a depth role. At this point, he's an ideal depth defenseman for the Canucks, but at 32 I think he's also shown that he's an able top 6 defenseman on many clubs that don't have the depth Vancouver does.

I think it's worth noting that Schroeder really showed his character imo taking a 600k one year deal that really helps the Canucks this coming season.

With 4.37 remaining, I'd be really pleased to see Tanev and Fistric signed in the range of 2.8 combined, and for insurance, a veteran, depth shutdown and faceoff specialist added - my preference would be Steckel - perhaps in the 900 k range.

Fistric and Steckel as depth shutdown options would make the Canucks slightly more daunting to play against for those bigger, teams in the mold of Boston and L.A., and give Tortorella some interesting options - he could go big on his fourth line and have a guy who wins a whole lot of faceoffs (for those matchups against teams like St Louis), or he could go for the speed option in Santorelli (perhaps a better option against teams like Chicago). I also like the option of a fourth line with a pair of centers.

Not sure what the contract situation is for the Canucks if they have enough left to offer 3 more.

Fistric would be a good add if they are unable to keep Alberts & he would create competition for the No.6 spot.

Curious about Steckel though, he would be a good faceoff guy to have but playing him on the 4th would mean 1 of sestito or weise sitting. He would help out the bottom 6 though and improve the clubs faceoff ability
