[Report] Ilya Kovalchuk Retires From NHL

Recommended Posts

Even if he was slated to make 11 million per year in the NHL, his tax bracket is right around 50%. In Russia he will make 20+ million tax free.

So would you rather make 5.5 million here, or 20+ million back home with family where you are considered a hockey god? (And the games aren't as physical and tight checking)

Pretty easy decision if you ask me.

PS: Ovechkin will jump ship too after the Olympics and when he realizes he won't win a Stanley Cup without a supporting cast. What will be really interesting is when the the first big name non-Russian jumps to the KHL. Then all hell will break loose as the NHL finally has legitimate competition.

After the Devils' 2012 miracle run to the Stanley Cup Finals:

1) Keeps the 1st round pick (29th) - which even at the time was conceived as the lowest NJ will probably pick in the time period they have to pay the penalty for the Kovalchuk contract

2) Loses Captain Parise via Free Agency

3) Traded the 1st round pick (9th) in one of the deepest draft classes for Cory Schneider (UFA in 2 years)

4) Kovalchuk bolts to Russia - leaves a $300,000 cap penalty for the next 12 years

5) Brodeur turned 41 this year

6) Team is rumoured to be in financial trouble - likely leading to an internal cap hit and hence becoming even less competitive in building a solid team

7) Team must give up either the 2014 (Sam Reinhart & Aaron Ekblad) or 2015 (Connor McDavid) 1st round pick - both of which they now have a legitimate chance at getting the 1st overall pick

Conclusion:

NJD is F*CKED.

If they can't build a solid team in the next two years, Cory might leave. But if they try their best this upcoming season, give up the 1st round pick, then absolutely tank the next season (Cory's UFA season), they have a good shot at Connor McDavid.

It's real interesting to see how Lou will wiggle his way out of this jam.
