-Vintage Canuck-
Alexander Zaytsev: Sergei Gonchar and Pavel Datsyuk were close to leaving the NHL for the KHL is summer according the GM of Metallurg.
Losing With Pride
Kind of obvious... Well with Gonchar.
Gustavo Fring
I'm glad there's a healthy competition amongst the two big leagues. Competition creates a better product.
Neversummer
If Pavel left, that would be a huge loss for NHL. See TSN play of the year - Pavel vs. Pavel http://poy.tsn.ca/
Lychees
Honestly any player lost to the KHL is a shame, but healthy competition for "top hockey league" is good regardless.
Mike Vanderhoek
But they didn't, so......

uber_pwnzor
That was the stupidest event ever. Datsyuk's plays were no where near the best of the year, he only got there due to his name and rigging. For one play vs play, Allen was up 70-30 with three hours to go and then just after the time expired it was 49.8-50.2 in favour of Datsyuk. The Magician
Wouldn't have surprised me if Gonchar left but Datsyuk leaving would have sucked
canucklax
Close could mean a lot of things, and with the source being a KHL GM, it's probably in his best interest to have it look as a viable substitute for the NHL
Alexander.Edler
Man Datsyuk leaving would be brutal for the NHL. He's like everyone's favourite player outside their own team.
Drouin
Damn. Imagine if the best player in the NHL left.
DownUndaCanuck
This is what the NHL gets for a half-season. If the entire season had been locked out, I have no doubts that plenty more players would have stayed in Russia, including these guys.
Saskatchewan Canucks Fan
With teams so scarcely drafting Russians. Eventually the only time we might see them play the North American players will be at the Olympics. Having that unknown factor of how good the Russians really are compared to our guys might end up creating quite the buzz.
Primal Optimist
I watch a lot of video of KHL games...I think they are talented by all means, but more of a fledgling product that a true competitor for the NHL. I see a rougher AHL product when I watch their stuff..and the fans...yikes....4 thousand bums in the seats is a GREAT night in most KHL cities....which leads me to wonder if the whole league is not a front for money laundering. In the end though, it is great to have awesome top tier hockey around the globe, the SM LIga, The Eliteseiren, The KHL, There is a top league in England now, what we need to see as global fans is a governing body like the IIHF and it could very well be the IIHF that does it, but will more likely need to be a Champiions League style body governing the various top leagues of the world...imagine a frozen classic game in Moscow feature the Hawks and the CSKA? Millions would watch that game live around the globe.
