Before the 2013 Entry Draft, Calgary offered their 3 first rounders for the first overall.

Basically = Monahon Poirier and klimchuck for MacKinnon

Most people also bashed Clagary for their 2 later picks, especial passing on Shinkaruk.

They could have drafted Shinkaruk and Erne or Zykov instead of Poirier who was off the board, and same with klimchuck.

They could have formed a crazy furute first line if

Shinkaruk - Monohan - Zykov or Erne

I would have probably taken the 3 first rounders, but I'd probably pick Monahan, Shinkaruk and then Klimchuk.

Emile Poirier might be good, but reminds me of Mason Raymond. I'd also stay away from Russians unless i would think franchise potential that drops. So, no Zykov for me. Though, I'm sure there is a dozen different combinations i would have gone with, for all 3 of those first round draft picks.

Honestly, It's insanely premature to say who will turn out good or not, but I'm not sure MacKinnon is a generation talent like some people think. You need massive depth to win championships, and if I'm a rebuilding team i surround the team with talent, unless i think the 1st overall pick is Crosby, or a Tavares but, I don't think I'd do it for Mackinnon. Maybe for Drouins.

3 firsts. Its like saying crosby or kesler, eberle and yakupov. Id take those three over crosby anyday. You need to get that depth if you have the chance. Its a no brainer unless of course you need the superb forward to sell your seats like the flames

Difference is, Mackinnon is pretty much guaranteed to be an NHL player. The players Calgary chose have a decent chance but are no means "guaranteed". Mackinnon is a guy that can change a game.. Sure, it's good to have a Kesler, Eberle, or Yakupov but Kesler was a lucky pick that developed into more than what he was projected to be. Yakupov was a 1st overall himself so that's not a very good comparison with the kind of picks Calgary had..

1st overall pick of Nathan's calibre > 6th overall, 22, 28 anyday..

Since this draft class is being compared to that of the 2003 draft, why don't we try and use that as a comparison. I took the best player in the 1st round between picks 1 and 5 and compared him to 3 picks, one being between picks 6-30, 22-30, and 28-30. If you don't understand what I mean by that is I took the best player available at each pick that hadn't already been picked by that pick number.

I came up with Eric Staal for Ryan Getzlaf, Ryan Kesler and Corey Perry. Two wingers and a center, just like Calgary's picks, interesting huh? In no way am I comparing Calgary's picks to Getzlaf, Kesler and Perry but you gotta think, if Colorado wants to win in the future they would of taken that trade cause even though Eric Staal is a great player and a franchise player, he is not better then Getzlaf, Perry and Kesler.

Just adding a different perspective to the topic ;)

I'd still take the 1st overall, though I wouldn't use it on MacKinnon. I just don't see the hype everyone else does, yes he's a great player but he was underwhelming at the U20s, while Drouin was lighting it up with RNH and Scheifele. Barkov was also a better option. Maybe i'm wrong and he's the next Sidney Crosby, though Sidney never had anyone in his draft class that could even compare, while MacKinnon has half a dozen.

If you're a contender with a deep lineup, the top pick is probably more valuable, but if you're the Calgary Flames with as many holes as a golf course, and years in a row spent on one, you're probably better off taking the three prospects, especially considering one of them is a 6th overall...
