Scottish Independence.

As someone who will be voting yes in the forthcoming referendum I would be interested in a Canadian's view of how they would vote if they were Scottish, if it would change their view of Scotland and if they think a YES vote would harm the United Kingdom.

I appreciate that you may not be particularly knowledgeable on the ins and outs of this matter but as Canadians who also have a part of their country that was/is looking to be independent (although I have to say I see little similarity as up till 1700s Scotland was a sovereign country and Quebec was never that) I would value your input.

By the way for those who don't know the people of Scotland are being subjected to scare stories on a daily basis by Westminster and the British media and one after another they have been shown to be groundless.

This weeks was that it would cost an Independent Scotland £50billion to have the trident nuclear submarines removed from their base on the River Clyde. Oh and they also said if we didn't allow Trident to stay they would declare that part of Scotland as coming under UK sovereignty .........like their Cyprus base.

Previously it was "the UK may snub Scottish Energy.

We were told we wouldn't get our pensions, we would pay more to use our phones, the scaremongering is endless.

I'm voting YES if I'm in the country next September.

I've still to sort out a job and stuff though so I'm not sure where I'll be then. I'd love for it to happen but a lot of people, particularly in the central belt seem to have been convinced that we'll be worse off out of the union and I don't think Salmond and the SNP are doing enough to swing the vote in their favour. Hopefully I'm wrong.

The way the government down south are threatening and scaremongering is pathetic.

This might be better suited in Off Topic btw. I don't think the crowd in here are into politics

An English friend of mine would be happy if you left. Not dissimilar to English Canada not giving a frack whether Quebec separated or not.

A drain on the rest of the country he says and they cannot stand alone and have the same benefits without much higher taxes. Even today the Scottish pound is frowned upon everywhere but in Scotland.

I would have nothing against a sovereign Scottland, but I am curious how the details of un-entanglement would go and to what end? What is the crux of the situation? It will certainly be expensive to split out defense for instance, now that you mention the subs...hard to split out debts and expenses and come up with a currency there would simply be an unending wave of logistics problems and expenses so that ....

..what?

Scottland would be "free" of English the english tyranny that has mostly unchanged it for hundreds of years, aside from indoor plumbing and infrastructure improvements that is...

So i am not against the idea but I would need to hear exactly why this would be needed in order to come to a full conclussion.

SC good luck with the job hunting, although I'm retired now I understand Scotland's economy is picking up faster than the rest of the UK so you might have timed it about right.

Isn't it funny how when you speak to some Scots they refuse to admit the propaganda is frightening them and then when you ask them why they are voting NO they come up with points which can either be easily answered or situations that are just as bad for us in the UK.

I suspect no nation seeking self determination has ever been subjected to such a barrage of negative propaganda. The Scottish Independence movement really doesn't have a national press of its own and the two largest "broadsheets" back the Unionist cause because they are owned by Unionists.

However as the ludicrous scaremongering has got worse even the Scottish Press have been forced to highlight the nonsense of it and the negativity.

HBR I'm afraid your English friend has no idea what he is talking about. Scotland pays more tax per head of population than the rest of the UK into Westminster's coffers.

You may want to educate him.........

Another point often forgotten by the rest of the UK is just how Londoncentric and South East biased the economic and fiscal policies are.

There is a saying in Scotland derived from this. "When England catches cold the Scots develop pneumonia." What is not recognised in that saying is that the opposite is also true. Scotland always lags behind when it comes to UK prosperity. That is why we are more than confident that we will prosper in Independence.

I'm afraid people like your friend may feel a real chill without Scotland to rely on.

My family is Scottish.

I don't want to see Scotland separate because I have the image of Great Britain in my head as whole and strong. I don't know the conflicts or the politics, but I would had to see a split when I have always known Scotland and England as partners in which the sum is greater than the parts.
