Riviera82
No one could ever seriously argue with his current/projected regular season stats, they are very impressive. Playoffs on the other hand leave quite a bit to be desired in my opinion anyways. Unless those numbers improve and a Stanley Cup win or two gets thrown in the mix, I think that could seriously hamper any HHOF chances he might have. It's been mentioned by others before but Luongo and Curtis Joseph are a pretty fair comparison as of right now. EDIT: Although looking at Joseph's playoff stats, he's had about 4 or 4.5 really good playoff years in terms of statistics, whereas Luongo has only had 1 or 1.5. Captain Bob
you gotta remember luongo played for a even worse Florida team. He broke the record for most saves in a season and they still missed the playoffs. True... But I'm just saying it surprises me. If I were to have guessed, I would have thought he was 100+ wins behind Luongo. But he's retired now so he'll never catch Luongo.
smithers joe
I've been saying for years that he is one of the most under appreciated players in years it seems. Cant catch a break. Torts will revive his career (not that it needs to be, but in the eyes of the haters anyway.) AV's system was a goalie killer. Watch Lundqvist's stats drop with AV at the helm. Probably get lots of 7-8 goal against night before getting pulled. Maybe my AV hate is a bit out of hand, back on topic though. Lu deserves way more respect than what he gets. In the Slot
So I was looking at hockey stats (as I often do when I'm bored) and decided to marvel at how good of a career Luongo has had thus far. This got me wondering, where will Lu be on the all-time lists when he finally retires? This first begs the following question: When will he retire? Will he retire in his late 30s, but before his contract expires? Or will he play out his contract? As of today, here are Luongo's main stats: Age: 34 Games Played 747 Games Rank: 19th Wins 348 Wins Rank: 17th Shutouts 62 Shutouts Rank: 15th For reference, the Top 30 in wins are in the spoiler below: Lu seems to average at least 4 shutouts per full season, so I'd say that's a safe number to use in that category. Personally, I don't see him playing til his contract ends, more like the late 30s, so I'll just use 39 years old as his retirement date. *As a side note, Lu may very well get even more than 4 shutouts next year, as he'll likely play more games than he has in recent years. - At 4 shutouts per year for five more years, Lu will be at 82 shutouts. Assuming no one passes him, that would put him at tied with Jacques Plante for 5th all-time. Pretty incredible. - Lets say Lu gets an average of 25 wins per season (I know, it's low, but I'm playing it safe). That adds 125 more wins to his total, bringing him up to a stunning 4th. - Assuming Lu plays 50 games per season (again, perhaps a bit low) Lu could add 250 more games to his total putting him at 997. Ah, what the heck, let's just say 1000 games, making him the 3rd goaltender to hit that milestone. So, I say, T-5th in Shutouts, 4th in Wins, and 3rd in Games. Pretty stunning, and keep in mind, I used relatively conservative measurements and assumed retirement before 40. It's pretty stunning what Lu could end up doing. I'd say if he wins a Cup, he not only has a chance at getting into the Hall of Fame, but he'd be a lock. How good do you think Luongo's stats will get? Heretic
i think his stat will get worse. he is past his prime and has been on the down slide the last 4-5 years
cmpunk
Brodeur, from Luongo's age on, has 47 shutouts since being on his "down slide" as you say... Sorry, goalies are different than regular players and are usually not past their prime until their late 30's...
TACIC
So if his stats are projected to be this good and teams know goalies are good into late 30s why was no one offering good pieces?

Me_
It's called the cap recapture rule, or the "Luongo Rule," and it's one of the nastiest tricks the NHL has ever pulled. It severely penalizes teams for making legal contracts that the NHL tried to fight but couldn't because they didn't violate the previous CBA. It also backtracks on the agreement they made with the NHLPA when they both agreed to rules that would limit backdiving contracts during the last CBA in which they promised to allow existing contracts (including Luo's) to stand. And if that weren't enough, they also added a provision that will punish any team that trades for a player with one of those contracts so that if the player were to retire before the end of their contract they would get a cap hit for the remainder of the contract for the amount of actual salary they paid over the cap hit. Kragar
It will be interesting to see what happens with Lu if Torts can get our D to play better in their own end. Better, resposonsible D play, from Edler and Bieksa especially, will go a luuuoonng way to to improving Lu's stats and confidence in the team. Yes, he has let in some bad playoff goals, but he has been left out to dry so often with sloppy D that there is only so much one man can do. Look what awesome D and the trap has done for Brodeur. In the playoffs, Brodeur has faced an average of 5 shots less per game, or about 16% less than Lu. If you assume the same save percentage for Lu, his GAA drops to about 2.14 with a similar reduction in shots. Pretty fricking stellar, if you ask me. A goalie can take you a long way in the playoffs (King Richard, anyone?). Better D, and offense averaging better than 2 goals a game would be significant help, too. How many lesser goalies have their name on the Cup? Nice research, OP. Edit: corrected some spelling
