harmer
we got rid of manny and we did not want him because of his serious eye injury and he had a cap hit of 2.5m which was too much for us he has stated that he would like to come back and play this year he would be great if he could discover his old shutdown form on the third line and even if he does not he is a faceoff wizard for the fourth line he said he would take a tryout or we could just sign him to a cheap 1 year contract

nuck nit
I think 'we' got rid of Manny for cap purposes. Doubtful that the Gillis show can now negate that heartfelt process.
AFrame14
It sucks cuz he was a perfect 3 rd line center, now he's useless

DeNiro
Gillis pretty much killed any chance of Malhotra getting a decent contract this offseason. The stuff about his vision should have been kept private. If he believes he can play and another team feels he can play then let him.
canucksnihilist
he could play a 4th line center role - but even AV who loved the guy, would just put him in for face-offs (then directly to the bench). That tells you everything you need to know.
nuck nit
Gillis felt he had to provide a show for the fan base's love of Manny. Lots of talk of 'timing' and cap space at that particular moment in time with Kes coming back on to the roster. Manny was adamant Gillis deferred to Gillis' 'perception' that Manny was in a compromised position and not what Manny wanted or believed to be the case. nuck nit
Thinking critically (and cynically) here, the Canucks are ultimately shelving Manny Malhotra - after discussing the possibility since last season - immediately in advance of Ryan Kesler's return from multiple offseason surgeries. So the timing of this alltruistic decision certainly seems convenient. But you know what, based on Mike Gillis' experience as a player (he's said that injuries were poorly looked after by the clubs he played for) and the sincerity of his comments this afternoon, I really do buy that the Canucks General Manager wanted to give Malhotra time to prove him wrong - including some time this season. http://canucksarmy.com/2013/2/14/mike-gillis-on-the-teams-decision-to-place-malhotra-on-the-ir Makes sense that Gillis would not shelve Manny until Kes came back but as DeNiro says,if Gillis was just killing his career for cap purposes sakes he should have kept the speech to himself. Drouin
MG messed this up. Manny was ready and willing to play. Even if not on the 3rd, line, he'd help a lot on the 4th.
TACIC
MG thought he won't be able to play and screwed Manny over by telling everyone he can't play
GrogZilla
Are you guys kiddin me? Manny was done, toast, kaput, finished. Gillis didn't screw Manny over by saying he couldn't play, he was just pointing out the obvious. Loved Manny, class act all around, but he never got so he could play the game again after he got hurt. He had multiple opportunities over 2 seasons to show he could still play, he failed them all. If a team thought he could still play, he'd get a chance. Hopefully he gets an assistant coaching job on the farm.
Warhippy
If Manny the player is no longer an option. How about Manny the development coach, the special teams coach the amateur scout? This guy is nothing but class and i'd like to have him on the team in any manner possible.
Papayas
1. Learn to use punctuation. 2. Referring to other people's comment about gillis screwing manny, gillis was acting like a responsible human being should act instead of treating manny like tool. Sure he can let manny call the shot on whether he should play or not. But the reality is that sometimes people don't know what's best for them and its up to others around you to take action. Manny's eye is badly dmaged and I am sure our staffs know how bad is is first hand. With the speed of the game we have today, it's like letting a blind person walk in the highway Nd hope he won't get seriously injured. Taking manny's issue public is the right thing to do as friend and wrong thing to do as a gm. Gillis took the friend role And I applause him for doing so Manny will thank him when he gets to retirement age and finds out he doesn't need to deal with concussions when he plays with his daughter 3. Punctuation please.
Bissurnette
I don't buy the fact that Gillis killed the classiest guy in the NHL's career just to save some cap room... I think he did it thinking about Manny's safety out there first and foremost, which should be on everyone's mind including the people on CDC. This guy is the definition of class and and all round amazing person in every sense of the word. He was a fan favourite, a coaching staff favourite, a management favourite and even a media favourite. If he wanted to get rid of his cap hit he would've put him on IR with a mysterious concussion (like he did with Ballard in 2012). This is actually one of the things that I think MG handled very well. You know he's going to have a career in hockey one way or another, just not as a player
BI3KSA-
Honestly, with MGs past problems with career ending injuries, and how horribly his injury was supposedly handled by the GM at that time, I very seriously doubt that he would kill Mannys career over some cap space... Anyone who honestly thinks that its nuts.
