Voting Maltsev

Nominating Valeri Vasiliev

played 1967 through 1982. A 9 time World Champion and 2 time Olympic champion and 1 time Canada Cup champion, Vasiliev was the greatest defenseman in Russian hockey history prior to Fetisov. Very similar in style, perhaps Vasiliev would get the nod over Fetisov had Vasiliev had a broader North American audience like Fetisov benefited from

Voting for Boris Mikhailov, the legendary winger of the 1970s for the USSR. Mikhailov scored at nearly a goal-per-game during his career and well over a point-per-game during his career in the Soviet leagues.

Once again, I'm nominating one of the most underrated players in NHL history (IMO), Alexei Zhamnov. I'm not sure how this guy doesn't get more appreciation for what he did in his time. You barely even hear about him, yet he was consistently near a point-per-game.

Zhamnov played particularly well with the Jets, maintaining well over a point-per-game in his time there. He had 267 points in 235 games with the Jets, but his most notable two seasons were 1993-94 and 1994-95.In 1993-94, he had an impressive 71 points in 61 games, which works out to a 95-point season (in 82 games). In the lockout-shortened season of 1994-95, he had 30 goals and 35 assists the 48 games, which would work out to 51 goals and 60 assists for 111 points.

Unfortunately, Zhamnov seemed to have his best years in seasons shortened by labour disputes or injuries, and thus he remains underrated by many.

Zhamnov finished his NHL career with 719 points in 807 games; numbers not that far off Kovalchuk, who was just voted onto the list at #13.

Voted Krutov

Nominating Vladimir Konstantinov

Stanley Cup champion, +/- of +60 one season, Norris runner up. His career stats are hindered by not coming to North America until he was 24, in addition to his tragic career ending car accident at the age of 30. This injury occurred after he had finished runner-up to Brian Leetch for the Norris.

Konstantinov was an outstanding shutdown defenceman who defied stereotypes by being one of the hardest hitters in the league in his prime.
