[Speculation] Leafs shopping Dion Phaneuf

Recommended Posts

Perhaps saying he "sucks" is a broad term, but he's definitely not a #1 center. Don't even get me started on how he's not even close to being what he was supposed to be. The guy was mentored by Joe Sakic to become their next legitimate franchise #1 center. He's not even close to being that anymore.

He's alright, he can perform if you surround him with the right wingers. Can he carry a game on his back? No. Is he worth his contract? No. Can he produce like a #1 centerman? Perhaps, with really good wingers.

He should not be a #1 center on any team in the NHL.

Phaneuf is actually a good player no matter what anyone says. The guy is just overpaid and played for our divisional rival and for the Leafs with a disturbingly high contract for his fallacies.

We have the exact same type of player in our line up in Edler.

Same point comparisons, same minutes played comparably, same penchant for big hits and pinching. And both have the dubious distinction of having cost playoff games or series via bad turnovers plays or giveaways.

If Phaneuf is only making in the $4 million to $5 million range he's highly desirable.

Anyone thinking otherwise needs to give their heads a shake, he's not all that bad.

Morgan Reilly is a 1.74 million cap hit if he is recalled.

Kadri - 44 pts in 48 games - 10 more points than Hodgson, who is looking to rob the bank in Buffalo. Kadri, who made 1.72 last year, is going to command a decent chunk of that 9.7.

Gunnarsson played 20+ minutes a game against strong competition and 39% ozone starts and yet managed 15 pts in a half season and was +5.

Franson had 29pts in 45 games as a blueliner, which projects to a 53 pt season....

Both these guys are far better than Liles, making an absurd 3.9.

Komorov was 5th in the NHL in hits last year.

If you look at what their remaining RFAs made last year, they combined for 6 million in cap and are all due for significant raises.

Alternatively, if you look at their cap situation and feel they're doing ok, then they're looking to move their captain for reasons other than cap space alone, which also makes sense, because he's about the most over-rated pylon in the NHL.

I know his cap hit would be 1.74 mil.

Kadri, Franson and Gunnarsson are all looking for raises but with Morgan Rielly already filling up a roster spot, they will be looking to trade a defenseman. The reason for why they are trading Phaneuf has nothing to do with cap space, it has more to do with the fact that he won't be back after next year and the Leafs want to get at least something in value for him.

Komarov went to the KHL.

First assumption - that a 19 year old fills up a roster spot.

The other speculation that has been repeated here is an assumption that their captain wouldn't want to return (what do any of you folks on CDC know about Phaneuf's intentions?) - which, whether a person buys that unsubstantiated story or not, is not as convincing as the far more obvious reasons to trade him - cap space and the fact he's not really that good.

lol @ this thread.

Phaneuf is an overpaid 3rd D-man. He's a tough two-way guy, but inconsistent in all areas.

Stastny is an overpaid 2nd center. He's an all-around guy who can still put up 50-60.

A swap would make sense, except the Leafs have no use for a center now. What's the point of having Stastny when Bozak could probably put up 50-60 between JVR and Kessel? Also, I'm assuming the point is to get rid of a bad contract, otherwise they'd just keep Phaneuf 'cause defense is their weakness.

Kadri is in a good spot in the second slot alongside Lupul and probably Clarkson, with Bolland and McClement rounding out the group.

The only way I see anything like this being possible is if the Leafs add Kadri and Stastny comes back with another piece, probably a D-man.
