Canuck Surfer
When you think about it trading Edler is logical. I mean he is a very good two way defenceman. But we have 3 other good two way defenceman. They are all, to a degree similar in that regard; plus we have $14 mill tied up in left handed D. But we lack a pure bruising, punish anyone who comes in front of our net guy. And we miss even more a pure puck moving, handling and puck rushing speedster to spark our transition game. Without those two elements, we still have a very good D but it is incomplete. Edler has the most trade value and we would not miss him much having Garrison and Hamhuis. Its logical? CaNuCkSLoUiE23
It's not up to MG, it's up to Edler. He has a no-trade clause.
Rick Grimes
Anyone honestly considering Trading Alex Edler should just go cheer for Jay Feaster and the Flames. Your level of stupidity is right on par with their GM, you should fit right in with their delusional fan base.

Everybody Hates Raymond
http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/van130703.html 17 days late dude... This has to have been posted in the last Edler thread.
Cromeslab
I'd be very surprised if the Canucks deal Edler at this point in time.
Sanford
Mike Gillis: "We drafted Edler in 2005 so that we can develop him as a top pairing defensemen with every intention to trade him for a pick".
Sanford
PS. Why on earth are we trading a defensemen who IMO we sorely need for another "young" center.. what was the point in drafting Horvat or Gaunce for that matter...

мeтpо
If this is true, I don't know why Gillis is so intent on getting a young center.. We have many to choose from.. maybe he wants a big big guy like a Bjugstad type or a Zack Smith.. Top 6 Forward would be much more useful than a 3rd line center.. Rick Grimes
How? Trading Edler would be one of those bold moves Gillis promised and it makes perfect sense.
DownUndaCanuck
We're getting VERY thin on the blueline now, MG better not make a trade like that. Edler can become a top-5 NHL defenceman and with Tortorella he may actually blossom (more defensive coach, will fix up his defensive game and get him playing more physically again). We've lost Ballard who was a quality #5 defenceman and replaced him with Weber. We're going to lose Alberts and have him replaced by Corrado. Already our depth defence is worse. Now replacing Edler with Smith would leave our back-end diminished. Hamhuis - Bieksa Garrison - Smith Tanev - Corrado Weber One of the worst defences in the NHL. We need Edler in the worst of ways, MG better not trade him no matter what. Right now a 23-minute eater is more valuable to us than a 3rd line center considering the competition we have for that spot.
Pears
Yeah let's trade the only dman we have that has potential to be a #1 while we're tryng to push for a Stanley Cup. It only makes sense if you're drastically under valuing Alex Edler. Trading Edler would be dumber than any move in Canucks history, including Neely, the Bertuzzi-Moore incident and all of that crap. Rick Grimes
I'm not under-valuing Edler, I know what he means to this team now and going forward. But there are too many teams out there that need a top defenseman and have what we need as well. Prime example is Detroit. Gillis wants a young third line center, the Wings have Darren Helm. We need one or two more prospects/young players to set up our future for the next ten years, Detroit has players like Gustav Nyquist and Martin Frk. To Vancouver: Darren Helm, Gustav Nyquist, Martin Frk To Detroit: Alex Edler IMO Gillis should look for an offer like this, give this example to other GMs who are interested in acquiring Edler, and if they don't offer something that consists of the same value, or is a little bit better, Edler should be taken off the trade block and will become our corner-stone #1 defenseman. peaches5
sounds to me more like he is just listening to offers and if someone just happens to offer something he wants he will try to trade Edler. That is completely different than what the person who wrote this article is trying to imply.
DownUndaCanuck
If anything we should consider trading some of OUR young centers (Schroeder, Horvat, Gaunce, Lain) for a top-4 defenceman. We've suddenly got an abundance of young centers who will all compete for the same roster spot, and if we want to win a Cup within the next couple of seasons these kids aren't much value to us on the farm. If MG is smart he'll move one of these big assets for some quality depth on defence, because right now that is our thinnest area and will be targetted in the playoffs BIG time.
