Pears
Apologies if there is already a thread about this topic that I couldn't find. We all know the mess Mike Gillis caused with the goalie controversy which almost got himself fired. He promised bold moves/big changes this off-season and has already made one with trading Cory Schneider for the 9th overall pick in this years draft which turned into Bo Horvat, and there is still about a month and a half left before training camp/pre-season to make some more moves. Will he sign/trade for a third line center if he feels neither Horvat or Brendan Gaunce are ready for the show? Will he make another bold move and fill some of our needs by trading Alex Edler? Will he go off the wall and sign a top restricted free agent like Alex Pietrangelo? This summer/up coming season IMO will make or break Gillis' GM'ing career. Discuss? Papayas
I do think Gillis is still a pretty decent gm who have his share of mistakes in his tensure... but honestly, who doesn't? he's still a pretty good GM who did more right than wrong to this team. Will he be able to top his past achievement as a canucks gm in the future? it's hard to say but I don't see why not depends on how our draft pick develop in the future. Rey
Schneider turns into a bust, because he isn't proven and he has plenty of red flags and Horvat becomes the next Canuck Captain and wins a cup. Suddenly, Gillis will be god. Honestly, I didn't mind this trade. A few years ago, people were screaming to trade Schneider for a 2nd round pick. Not only has Schneider's value risen, but you get a 9th overall pick out of it. What's not to like? We've wanted a top prospect for years. Is it really true that we could have gotten a better trade? Who knows, but the media has been making stuff up for years. Schneider could fail, just because he's in a terrible situation. Broduer wants to play for 2 more years, and Schneider will be a backup and maybe try a different style of game. By the time Brodeur retires, Schneider will be a UFA, and a 30 year old.. I thought the Hodgson trade was much worse but Hodgson has turned into a nut job. The Keith Ballard trade was just a complete disaster, but he had a good record prior. BTW - If he trades Edler, I think it's a good case to fire him. I'd say he'd screwed up the defense, from adding Ballard and keeping Bieksa instead of Ehrhoff. Now, if he trades the Canucks best D, for junk then there's clearly a problem.

Lu's next agent
a deep playoff run and a couple of major free agents early next summer should buy him a couple more years with Aquilini (he's stuck by him so far!)... the only thing that might complicate all of it is injuries, then it's anyone's guess - if we miss the playoff's or exit 1st round again he's done i appreciate what Gillis has tried to do, but am one of those that think he has done one experiment too many and should be gone sooner than later, but lets see what this year has in store
euphoria/
You are so cool. Anyways, I think time will tell. The impact Tortorella has on this team will also make or break MG.
Plum
LOL what? He needs to re define his career or redeem himself? He was the GM that got us 1 win away from the Stanley Cup. This is isn't a good thread. You have to think this through.
surtur
The only way any GM can say the were successful is if they win a cup gmmg is no different.

Warhippy
Go back to the Hodgson trade, and give Buffalo Hodgson Sulzer and a 2nd round pick for Kassian and a 1st round pick and Gillis looks like a genius. Gillis keeps that 1st round pick in the Ballard trade genius. Booth isn't injured the entire season and puts up the points he's capable of, genius. Keeps Ehrhoff...Genius. At this point it's to early to tell if he'll sink or swim. But a new coach and a revamped bottom 6 will definetly do wonders for the team. My personal favorite is how he is singling out players from within BC it seems as he's picked up a glut of those lately, something the team has rarely done. In the Slot
Yeah i don't know any of that. Seems pretty clear to me that Luongo asking for a trade caused the whole goalie controversy & I doubt very much that Gillis almost got fired. Firing the coach & hiring his polar opposite would be the boldest move he made. Schroeder probably has the best shot at being the 3rd line center, doubt he'll sign another center, unless he can get someone at bargain basement prices right before training camp. He needs to sign another defenceman more then he needs another center. Not a chance he goes after a big money RFA, there's simply no cap space for it. Just because his critics on message boards think he should be fired doesn't make it true. No matter how you slice it, in the end he has been incredibly successful as GM. The team has been 225-111-40 since Gillis took over, has won 5 division titles & been in the playoffs every year. They have longest sell out streak in team history, merchandise sales & TV ratings have soared. The revenues & actual worth of the Canucks have increased a ton under Gillis. Thinking he's in danger of being fired is more wishful thinking then realistic imo.

a Fool
He's done pretty well dealing with all the lockout, cap crunch, "Luongo rule" bs doled out by the NHL. Retooling the coaching staff was the right move, and it will have a pretty big impact on next season. Not sure if he has to "redeem himself" for running a perennial top 5 team in the NHL. pomorick
Gillis has done an admirable job so far. Not all of his moves have worked, but he has made moves. I know that in my work the only people that ever make mistakes are those that try to improve things. Those that never try never error. Gillis is making mistakes sometimes, but at least he is trying and all of his moves are rationale.
TOMapleLaughs
Well i guess every off-season 'redefines' a GM, if that's all we're discussing.
