Police say the death of a woman who fell from a balcony on the 13th floor of a luxury condominium in downtown Vancouver on Sunday afternoon is suspicious.

Witnesses told police they heard screams at about 5 p.m. PT Sunday, just before the unidentified woman plunged to her death.

On Monday the area in front of the high-rise on the 1400 block of Howe Street had been cleaned up and there are two bouquets of flowers on the ground.

Investigators with the forensic identification team spent hours at the suite on Monday collecting fingerprints and removing evidence, including a computer.

Police said they are only speaking to witnesses today and no arrests have been made. However, neighbours say a man came down to the scene from the building with his dog and was taken away by police.

Sgt. Randy Fincham said police have spoken with someone who lives in the condo.

"We believe we have tracked down the occupant of the suite that we believe that the woman was at," Fincham said.

"We are speaking with that person and we will talk to that person again to try and determine why that woman was there, or perhaps why she was out on the balcony at the time."

CBC News has learned the suite where the woman fell from is owned by a Kitsilano dentist. It's unclear if he was in the condo at the time of the incident.

Neighbours say there had been a wild party on the same floor, the night before.

Fincham says police were called to the same building earlier Sunday.

"We had been to the same building, possibly another condo in the same area and spoke to a number of occupants at that time," he said.

"It's too early to tell if this is possibly related to that suite."

Police are asking anyone who may have heard or seen anything suspicious to come forward.

Vancouver Police are still investigating the chain of events that led a woman in her 20s to fall from the 13th floor of a downtown apartment building:

The woman, who has not been identified, fell just after 5 p.m. Sunday. Witnesses heard screaming and phoned 911.

Paramedics arrived to the 1400-block of Howe Street to find the woman deceased.

But police had been called just hours earlier, at 2 a.m. Sunday to the same building, said VPD spokesman Sgt. Randy Fincham.

“Police are still looking at details” from that visit, he said.

The VPD’s forensics identification and major crimes units were on scene until late into Sunday evening.

The death is being treated as suspicious. No arrests have been made.
