For those who say we are worse off than ever

Recommended Posts

oh goodness me, how could i possibly not consider this? how DID people manage to function when "something serious comes up" and all communication is cut off? when the theatre doesn't have a phone? no payphones exist? the theatre staff refuses to pass on messages, etc.?

how DID those mid-late 90s cavemen function without constant communication?

There's a obsessive nostalgia in Vancouver about the Counterculture era, and to a lesser extent the '80s, even amoung young people.

However I don't think most would like in those times on an actual day-to-day basis once the novelty wore off.

I agree OP, people get nostalgic about the "good old days". They call things today bad when really they just aren't used to it. Or they conveniently forget the bad things about their era because it doesn't affect them anymore, ex. inferior technology, segregation, WWI and II, more deadly disease.

Sure we're not perfect and maybe some things have gotten worse, but humans learn from trial and error and I think the world will keep advancing over a long period of time.

People have also been complaining about "kids these days" since the beginning of time. Everyone like to feel superior about their generation but the truth is older people have said the exact same things about them. Now it's "kids and their cell phones" in the 60's it was "kids and their TV" in the 50's "kids and their rock n roll". I don't think kids get worse every generation, they just change.

I'd say "Things" have gotten better but because of that, People have gotten worse. Generations that came before went through hardships unimaginable today. They fought, gave up their lives, their sons and daughters so that we could have this experience that we have today. It's hard to appreciate things when they are simply handed to you. It leads to a false sense of entitlement.

Technology is also a double edged sword, making our lives easier but at the same time desensitizing people. You can be fully connected to the world today but have zero human interaction thanks to technology.

I think happiness is more attainable if your life is simplified. Like what BuddhasHand was saying about the monkey who was fine eating leaves but once he was onto the juice, those leaves were a source of rage. We were all fine before the internet but now people are completely out of their element if they lose their wifi. haha

Strange days indeed.

You know what is disgusting now a days

You go to a restaurant, look around and see 2 people going to dinner looking down at their phones.

You go over to a birthday party, sit around the fire, nobody talks they just stare at the phone.

A 2 year old is acting like a brat, throw it an iPad with Dora on it.

Kids can watch hardcore porn with the flick of their finger, they don't even know what passion is, they figure relationships and sex works like porn.

technology is separating us from reality.

Things I liked when I was young:

1) you didn´t need cellphones to know where people are and you didn´t need tons of computers with you to "keep you safe"

2) the cars were old, noisy and fuel destroyer. but damm they were awesome!

3) the Mega Drive (Sega Genesis) was the coolest thing ever made, even when the console reacher the temperatures of 35Celsius because at that time Video-Games didn´t have coolers and you could use the device to warm the entire house...

4) Sonic 2 and 3 were the coolest thing in the universe and people tried to discover the "secrets" taking notes of the passwords on any kind of paper...

5) Ayrton Senna was alive and ruling the Formula-1...

6) VASP (Airline). made my life, probably I wouldn´t be alive if it wasn´t for this airline...

7) Trans-Brasil (Airline), a.k.a "Brazilian Braniff" in USA...

8) VARIG (the old giant one not this crap of today), was the biggest airline on the entire South Hemisphere...

9) the Boeing 737-200 was considered onde of the most skilled and strongest jet powered airplanes ever made, people saw this airplane on every big city in Brazil.

10) the Boeing 737-300 was considered one of the most advanced at that time.

11) McDonnell Douglas MD-11 (my favorite airplane. the coolest airplane ever made!)

12) the country was 300% safer than now. you know, because the military government did something good for the population...

13) you could travel by train for 400KM paying only 20US$...

14) Manaus was hot, but not like the hell of today. you can burn a cow/bull/dear on the asphalt of this city!

15) my 1st love...

16) the fact I learned to drive a VW Passat 2.0 turbocharged with 10 years old :)

17) the "Pentium 1" was considered the most advanced computer ever made but you could use the monitor as a mass destruction weapon since it´s weight was something about 35KG/70LBS...

18) I wasn´t ugly...

19) the travels by boat in the middle of the jungle to visit my grand parents. the boat was huge at it took 1 week (one way only) travelling in the middle of the Amazonic River...

20) people were more polite...

If I had to put our cultural change into one word it would be 'carelessness.'

I don't think we take as much 'care' with things as our ancestors, whether that be with possessions, the environment or each other. Granted, we make strides in each of those cases yet they seem to be just against the rising tide.

There doesn't go a day by for me where I don't see people heedlessly damaging things, mindlessly polluting out of laziness, or being callous in their interactions with others.

I think we need to try and rediscover what the term 'gentleman/gentlewoman' truly means.

I was born in the 70s, so I guess I can safely say, "in the old days". Here's my take:

I find so much is better now and I find that so much was better then. It's a total trade off, if you ask me.

I love the fact that I can look up things on the internet. I remember having to use World Book Encyclopedia to do my research (or go to the library and try to find something - and not always having the good books IN the library).

Getting a hold of someone is so much better now. Back when I was a kid, we'd get a busy tone on someone's home phone. Chances are there was no answering machine, either. You had to call and call back again, hoping to get a hold of someone. Really really awful during an emergency! By contrast - My friend is in the hospital right now and I can text her any time, even in the middle of the night. Keeps us close and helps her not feel alone.

But, MAN do I miss some things. I'll admit that I LOVED LOVED LOVED everything about the 80s - the music, the movies, the clothes, walkmans, the toys, etc. Miss it crazily.

I sure preferred the gas prices back then, too. For me the cheapest price I got gas at was $0.45 a liter.

I miss more "real" food that didn't cost an arm and a leg. I remember my grandmother complaining once about how egg yolks look so pale compared to when she grew up (and had eggs from the farm). Most eggs in the store used to be good. Now, you have to pay through the nose, or be lucky enough to find some good farm that you trust. Same goes with meat. I can't explain why it was better back then, it just was (and reasonably priced darn it!)

I miss the bigger yards of housed made in the old days. We lucked out and have a fairly decent yard in our newer house, but WOW do they pack the houses close together these days, just to fit more on to one space.

So, all in all, I miss the old days, but love the new stuff, too!

Exactly. I went to a Canucks game after a long time in 2011 and saw a lot of people looking at their phones when the game was on. There were other people who had no interest in watching the game at all, why even spend the big bucks when you're not even going to watch the game. I still remember the days when it was loud during the WCE days and even before that when Bure/Mogilny were with the Canucks. Technology or "New Tech" is the reason why the crowd is so quiet at Rogers Arena? -_-
