Bruins vs. the Salary Cap

Recommended Posts

I've been looking at the Bruins roster on Capgeek, and NHL revenue projections from here http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/globe-on-hockey/how-the-nhls-salary-cap-could-hit-90-million/article7029575/

I've noticed that they could be in an extremely sticky situation in the next few years.

Next year, they will have 7 million in cap space, but only 15 men on the roster. The following year, they'll only have 8 rostered players and have 24 million in cap space.

When you add in the fact that all of the players they have signed to play in 2015-16 have NTCs, they don't necessarily have the option of moving big names to create space. Next year, only guys earning 1.5 mil or less can be traded.

While the players they do have signed are of the highest quality, they'll have difficulty in getting any depth.

Are they about to be in a big mess?

Unfortunately I think they're going to be okay. They just put Savard on LTIR every season to free up 4M and weasel their way out of that contract. The cap will be going up also. I think the worst Boston will have to deal with is the decline of Chara/Seidenberg pairing - they'll have to lean on Krug and Hamilton.

They're not going to be as dominant as they are right now for a while. I hope they just miss the playoffs next year...

7 players to sign with 7M isn't that bad - they can just play a bunch of their rookies or make very cheap depth signings. A few 600-800K players, a few 1-2M players to complement their great core. The following season they can go free agent fishing.

There are worse teams out there. Pittsburgh is in a mess.

7 players at 7 million sounds vaguely familiar to the Canucks situation entering this offseason. Personally, I would prefer more space for Gillis to work, but what can you do?

58 mil next year and 11 players seems like a poor situation. I did the capgeek math in my head and came a few million shy of 58 (maybe because calculators are better at math than beer and sunshine, who knows), nevertheless, expect Shero to be mixing tons of rookies with veterans next year. Who is their up and coming goalie should Fleury be dealt next off season?

With the cap going up, I doubt that they'll be in any significant problems but with that being said, they could be forced to move 1 or 2 players. Savard on LTIR helps a bit, I think 4M? Imagine if they signed Horton for a long term and a huge cap hit with a NMC/NTC lol

As a huge Lucic fan, I agree.

Hopefully he has a bad year next year and they buy him out. Hopefully he'll go by his word and come to Vancouver
