KFBR392
Not trying to be insensitive, but aren't people with Down syndrome generally very strong? A lot of them are built like tanks. A 294 pound tank with Down syndrome who is flailing like a maniac probably deserves to be in handcuffs until he cools down a bit.

The Brahma Bull
Stupid cops at it again. And they weren't even on duty at the time?

Offensive Threat
O.K. the guy weighs 294 pounds , has an IQ of 40 (which is on the low side for a person with downs syndrome) cant handle being touched or talked to and is prone to violent outbursts. A recipe for eventual trouble. Im going to guess Frederick County Sheriff deputies dont get the level of training say a Metro Vancouver police officer gets. The Brahma Bull
so next time you see a guy flailing, screaming and cursing on the street targeting you, don't call the cops and expect them to help you out.
Danthecanucksfan
Theres always a better way to handle a situation, I bet everyone involved probably wouldn't mind getting a second chance with this one, unfortunately life doesnt offer second chances very often when it comes to the the difference between dead or alive. Primus099
The cops escalated the situation in the movie theatre after being given good advice by the caretaker. They threatened to take this young guy to jail. There was a much more common sense way to deal with this and they decide to act like a bunch of jackasses. Patience and understanding is something those fools don't understand.
Donky
So none of these geniuses had the idea that maybe they should just let the 300lb retarded guy watch the movie again?
The Brahma Bull
it wasn't good advice it was stupid advice, leaving him alone to "cool down" led to the entire situation in the first place. she should have just taken him with her to the car instead of going to get it and leaving him there by himself. what if he was in one of his freak outs and started physically harming someone? would she still be telling the cops to leave him alone and wait for him to calm down? Donky
How about we just let the guy watch the freaking movie again or let the handler deal with it. The fact that he had unexplained damage to his larynx speaks volumes about what really happened.

Special Ed
Just an unfortunate situation. Cuffing someone should be routine but in this case a mentally disabled person was difficult to handle. The only thing I can think of is better situational awareness by the officers but its a difficult situation with trying to restrain a large person. BabychStache
This is horrible news. It really hits home. My good friends have a Down syndrome baby and he is such a great little guy. Such a sad story, I feel terrible for his family. Isn't this an example of where a taser would have been the perfect tool for the job?
Batmania
Non Violent Crisis Prevention Intervention would have saved this mans life. If he had a worker with him she should have been certified. Like someone said though, let him watch the movie. Call his mother and go sit down and watch the movie until she gets their. Give him a chance to calm down and come out of crisis and avert this entire thing.
