Madison Square Garden given 10 years to move!

In what the New York Times describes as “an eviction notice of sorts,” Madison Square Garden — the home of the New York Rangers — has been given 10 years to vacate the premises so that the city can build a new Penn Station.

The arena’s owners, the Madison Square Garden Company — which also owns the Rangers and NBA’s Knicks — had wanted an operating permit in perpetuity. However, the Council voted, 47 to 1, for a decade-long limit.

All this comes as the Garden is completing a three-year renovation with a cost of nearly $1 billion.

How this all plays out remains to be seen. As the Times noted in June, “Even with the Council’s nudge, it will take leadership from Governor Andrew Cuomo and from Washington to move the Garden and re-make the station into a safer, more suitable gateway to New York.”

This sounds hokey to me. I'm guessing the city is just trying to position themselves into bullying the arena every 10 years to pay massive tax hikes or something. Make it sound like they already have plans for that site if ownership isnt willing to pony up more dough for the city.

Tons of other vacant/derelict sites in that city to contruct a new station at....no reason to tear down an iconic sports arena and make them move.

Taring down one of the most iconic stadiums for a train station..wow.. then what rebuild in new jersey(pure speculation) just like Met Life Stadium? Makes sense why not have all New York sports team based out of New Jersey lol.

It actually doesn't surprise me this decision was made, their concil members seem to have questionable choices but voting 47-1, wow you would think it would've been a bit closer than that

$1 billion In New York money is like $100,000 in Vancouver money.

The gentrification of the SoHo area and its surroundings has been talked about and ratified about five years ago.

One thing the area will not see though, is Robert Moses type highway construction. Back in the 70's the people of SoHo rose up and fought the man with all their might until there was a very good chance of full out riots. It was avoided by curbing Moses' motivations to propagate further the car industry with his highways.
