The Edmonton Oilers announced Thursday that the team has agreed to terms with defenceman Darnell Nurse on a three-year entry level contract.

Nurse, 18, was the seventh overall selection in this year's NHL Draft, after recording 41 points and 116 penalty minutes in 68 games with the Ontario Hockey League's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

In six playoff games with the Greyhounds, he tallied four points and six penalty minutes as the Greyhounds fell in six games to the Owen Sound Attack.

The 6'5, 192-pound blueliner was named the OHL's Scholastic Player of the Year for 2012-13, after carrying an 85 per cent average in six Grade 12 University Prep courses.

Nurse played for Team Canada at the 2013 Under-18 World Junior Hockey Championship and participated in the 2013 Canadian Hockey League Top Prospects Game. Other international experiences include a bronze medal with Team Ontario at the 2012 Under-17 Hockey Challenge (named to the tournament All-Star Team) and a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

Wish we got him, but I understand why MG didn't trade him to the Oilers, no way I would want Schneider to play behind their young core.

At least we can see Kassian or Sestito going after this kid in the front of the net hopefully next season.

I doubt he will play this year, dmen are usually brought along a bit slower, plus Nurse still has to widen out, which he will he is still a kid. I was curious to what his NHL cap hit was, same with Bo's, because wasn't Mckinnon's 3.7?

It would be fantastic if there was a rule that forced newly drafted players to play another year of Jr. and then 1 year of AHL. Although it would be tough for struggling teams (like Edmonton/Florida/Colorado etc).

In my opinion 18 year olds have no place in the NHL. Not only would it be great for the Jr and Farm team markets, any way a team can protect their assets longevity is great.

Case in point? Ryan Nugent Hopkins. Already 2 shoulder surgeries and just turned 20.

So, I am not worried at all if Gillis doesn't sign Bo or Gaunce or Shinkaruk this year. Let them develop for another year.

I think his cap hit would only apply if he plays more than 9 games, otherwise his contract would just slide and have no impact on the cap. Unlike say a Frank Corrado, who's cap hit now applies (thank you AV!).

The ELC's are pretty straightforward that way, which is why he being the last one standing without a contract in the top 10 is curious.

Any time a player spends on our roster, regardless of games played, counts against the cap. Also, the performance bonuses typical on high end ELCs count until they aren't achievable anymore, so you have to account for those in the cap hit. It doesn't matter if the contract slides when he's sent back down to junior before playing a 10th game, but obviously his cap hit would be prorated for the time he was here.
