Boudrias
I can't believe how much Tanev is overrated on here. 1.2 mil max based on what comparable players are signing for. Was our defensive game really that bad under AV that a guy who only has stay at home defense in his arsenal with no offensive or physical game is seen as some kind of future superstar worthy of PK Subban RFA money? Come on people. Any more than 1.4 (and even that is generous) and they should trade him for someone who does not believe his own hype. The ONLY reason to ask for more than the going rate is that you believe you are worth more than you are. If that is the case with Tanev, they sohuld ship him out now. He played with very good NHL veteran dmen his entire time here. Once he can carry a pairing himself (and no, he did not carry Ballard they complemented each other well) or add offense or physical play then he can ask for a bigger contract. Until then he better not get more than the current RFA crop are signing for. The reality is he is replaceable at that price.
wallstreetamigo
none of our Dmen are worth their contracts if your going to compare to PK.....same with most of our forwards if you compare them to Ladd... just a ton of overpaid players... that MG would like you to believe we got at a discount... but if you look at production and how him and hamhuis are our best Defensive Dmen... its hard to argue that tanev isnt worth half of hamhuis's contract wich would put him at 2.1m ...1.5 would be a steal for the nucks... and for a guy who had alot of blocked shots last year the type of Dman torts is going to want its hard to let him walk ..... wallstreetamigo
I would suggest that Tanev was the stronger of the two when he was paired with Ballard. But you are right. Tanev plays a safe game, is not physical and has shown little offence to date. He can throw a pretty decent pass. He has not played a lot of NHL games either for that matter. If he put on 5 - 10 pounds this summer I would consider a bonus. IMO the big question about Tanev is whether he can handle the physical side of the NHL game over a season and playoffs. He did show some offensive flair late last year but then got injured. To much hype for this kid but it is Vancouver.
Benchsplinters
The issue though is that the salary cap is the piper that needs to be paid in this scenario. The other contracts on this team do not exist in a vacuum and are the exact reason Tanev's contract needs to be reasonable. Torts also values physical toughness and play along the boards by the D so there will be things he does not like about Tanev too. Why do people think Tanev is worth so much more than all the other very good young RFA's who are signing at around $1 million per? Contract-wise THAT is the important barometer because it is relative. It is not an indictment of Tanev himself as an individual player but reality of the salary cap environment. It does not matter that he is half as good as Hamhuis or whatever other argument is being made. It is about what price the market has set for comparable players at comparable points in their careers. And for Tanev that is about 1 to 1.5 mil for two years or so. Giving Tanev a big contract now does not help this team at all.
JeremyCuddles
They don't have the cap to pay him big dollars. He takes a schroeder deal for 1-2 years until they can clear cap for him, if he pans out. 1.5 tops in my books for now. If he can develop into a Hamhuis type player that'd be bonus for an undrafted player.

Bananas
If MG f---'s this up, I'm gonna lose it. Just sign the kid already. And for Christ's sake, NO NTC!
Moonshinefe
Your joking me right? The guy has no right to be paid as much as guys like Subban and Del-Zotto. He cant even put up points in the AHL for godsake. He over-valuing himself by way too much if hes asking for north of 1.5m. Until he can actually add some offence to his game he deserves nothing more than 1.5m on a one year deal.
shazzam
2 mill? PK Subban tried to hold out and settled for 2 mill in the first year of his contract. That was coming off a 36 pt season. Tanev will be lucky to get half of that
Drouin
The reason is probably the term of the contract, Tanev probably wants a longer term than the Canucks want to give.
