Justin Trudeau urges legalization of pot

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, who has already called for the decriminalization of marijuana, this week said he would like to see it legalized altogether.

Speaking in Kelowna, B.C., he told a crowd, “I’m actually not in favour of decriminalizing cannabis. I’m in favour of legalizing it.

“Tax it, regulate. It’s one of the only ways to keep it out of the hands of our kids because the current war on drugs, the current model is not working. We have to use evidence and science to make sure we’re moving forward on that.”

The Liberal leader’s comments, captured in a brief YouTube video clip, appear to take his party further than it has gone so far on the issue of drug legalization.

The party’s website says, based on a resolution last year from the British Columbia Young Liberals, “Liberals understand the need to consider ending the prohibition of marijuana and addressing the root causes of crime to see real results.” That resolution appears under the heading “Smart on Crime and Cannabis.”

In November, the Charlottetown Guardian reported remarks Trudeau made at a Prince Edward Island high school, in which he said he was a “huge fan of decriminalization” of pot.

According to the Guardian, he said, “I think we have to recognize first and foremost that the war on drugs, as it exists right now, doesn’t work.”

In that appearance, Trudeau also emphasized, however, some of the negative effects marijuana might have on the brain. “We have to be mindful of the message that we’re sending, about what’s OK and what’s not OK, because we’re trying to get people to live healthier lives,” The Guardian quoted him as saying.

Personally, not being a smoker I still agree with him, if it legal and affordable it would help reduce gang involvement and allow people to get clean, unlaced weed and stop people from being forced onto other drugs.

Legalize it.

Legalize heroin, coke, Meth, w.e... just get the gangs off our streets. Also tax it.

One thing they should really legalize for everyone's safety is MDMA. So many people die from buying it off dealers who don't make it pure. Pure MDMA would be safe for the user and taxed.

Anyone who thinks legalization/decriminalization will stop gang activity is simply an idiot. It's not going to stop criminals from either smuggling it, nor is it going to stop them from producing it and selling it on the streets.

Haven't the Liberals promised this before?

Anyway, legal items like cigarettes and gasoline are a major source of income for organized crime worldwide, thanks to undercutting taxes and fees.

Its possible that there would still be money to be made in weed even if it was legal.

Won't ever get me to vote in a horribly flawed limited party system but it's a step in the right direction.

The only reason it's illegal is because with weed people are content without going and spending money on other crap to keep themselves from being bored silly.

It's a no brainer though.
