The North Pole is Now a Lake

The one thing that makes no sense to me is that there is a lot of money in a new green way to produce energy, yet people always argue that the "fat cats" keep it at bay in order to make money.

I also fail to see how we are doomed. We will adapt to climate change.

Though I am of the opinion that humans have accelerated climate change (which yes, would happen anyways naturally, but it's being accelerated in a way which could have grave implications for us as a species, not just the environment), this is not anymore particularly worrisome than any other global warming news.

Firstly, melt ponds aren't anything new. Summer temperatures have gone up to 5 degrees Celsius in the past, and these melt ponds have been observed multiple times over decades and decades. Secondly, it's not like this is a gaping hole in the ice, it's a patch of melted water on top of the ice. Apparently, you can walk through it with hip waders on. And also, just throwing this out there, that's not at the North Pole. The camera and buoy and currently northeast of Greenland, and will eventually pass south between Greenland and Ellesmere Island.

This picture isn't ominous at all. What it is is cool; that's a pretty interesting occurrence to see. What's ominous is the data showing that the summer sea ice has been halved compared to what it was just a couple of decades ago.
