AllEyezOnMe
A gun in the hands of a 14 year old is just as effective as a gun in the hands of a 44 year old.
Ghostsof1915
The point still stands - a gun can just be effective in disabling a target as it is in mortally wounding it.
Buddhas Hand
Fun fact - a gun can also do that. Shoot him in the leg or arm and the gunman quickly loses his footing, making it easier for the eventual arrest. Here's the problem - the key was shooting at civilians before the police arrived. What other choice was there?

SNACanuck
centermass AND until the threat is neutralized. If that means 1 or 100 rds need to be put on target that's what you do. The North Hollywood shootout taught that lesson. It may not be the popular answer, but its reality. And shoot a limb? Anyone who says that has been watching way too many hollywood movies or been playing video games.
Ghostsof1915
Nice group. I'm sure grouping expands quite a bit when someone is waving a gun back at you, though.

DonLever
I can't believe some people are suggesting the police disarm a suspect by shooting him in the arm or leg. That is hollywood stuff. Police are taught to shoot at a critical mass, the torso. Arms and legs are smaller than the body and are moving all the time - they are easy to miss compared to the body. And someone already said handguns are very inaccurate.
Common sense
Yet you're missing the point entirely. When an officer faces a situation like this one, where his/her own life or the lives of bystanders are legitimately threatened, you shoot to kill.
