Fun fact - a gun can also do that. Shoot him in the leg or arm and the gunman quickly loses his footing, making it easier for the eventual arrest.

Here's the problem - the key was shooting at civilians before the police arrived. What other choice was there?

centermass AND until the threat is neutralized. If that means 1 or 100 rds need to be put on target that's what you do. The North Hollywood shootout taught that lesson. It may not be the popular answer, but its reality.

And shoot a limb? Anyone who says that has been watching way too many hollywood movies or been playing video games.

I can't believe some people are suggesting the police disarm a suspect by shooting him in the arm or leg. That is hollywood stuff.

Police are taught to shoot at a critical mass, the torso. Arms and legs are smaller than the body and are moving all the time - they are easy to miss compared to the body. And someone already said handguns are very inaccurate.
