Considering the kid seems to be a marginal player, Gilmour's probably protecting the team from potential dressing room issues if the coach decided to dress him. Rightly or wrongly, the scratched guys would be suspicious Gilmour Jr. wasn't playing due to merit, which would lead to suspicions that the coach was being pressured to play certain guys.
