(Proposal) Vanek, once his contract is up

Recommended Posts

I don't think Vanek wants to be a part of a rebuild and his contract is up next season and I can see him leaving Buffalo. Sure he has a 7.something mill price tag but we need a goal scorer and he may be a nice fit.

He has had two 40 goal seasons, 3 if you count that he was on pace for about 40 this season, hasn't had a season under 20 goals since his arrival in the league and would make our top-6 one of the best in the league. I know he is a left winger so it might not work with the Sedins but maybe he can change like Burrows did. If not he and Kesler can make a 1b line and we would be that much deeper.

D. Sedin-40 goal scorer, one of the best passers in the game

H. Sedin- One of the best play makers in the game, can also score(not elite level though)

Kesler-40 goal scorer, selke winner, hell of a shot

Vanek-40 goal scorer, pretty close to pont per game player and if given elite passers like Sedins could possibly make it to 50 goals.

I don't think that there are many teams other than the Pens that have as much skill in their top-6 as our would be. We have more depth but they have more Elite Player(Sid,Malkin)

We could do

Sedin-Sedin-Vanek

Booth-Kesler-Kassian

Burrows-Shroeder-Hansesn(Schroeder will be more developed and will likely be a lot better)

Higgins-Free agent/rookie-Free agent rookie

or you could do

Sedin-Sedin-Kass/Burr

Vanek-Kesler-Burr/Kass

Booth-Shcroeder-Hansen

Of course we don't have any cap right now but next year the cap might go up and maybe we can afford to have him on our team.

I tried to work a scenario for this and this is what I came up with. I had to get rid of Higgins and Booth.

Running some numbers leads me to believe that the cap will be about 68 million next year.

We have the following players under contract, for a total of 43.75 million:

Kesler, Burrows, Booth, Higgins, Richardson, Sestito, Edler, Hamhuis, Bieksa, Garrison, Corrado, Luongo, Eriksson.

I think Booth will be gone by trade or buyout, so we'd have 39.5 comitted to the cap, so cap space of 28.5 million.

We'd need to re-sign:

Kassian, Hansen, Tanev and the Sedins.

We'd need to add:

Top 6 winger, 3 bottom 6 forwards, 7th Dman.

Sedin - Sedin - Kassian (2.75)

Vanek - Kesler (5) - Burrows (4.5)

Higgins (2.5) - Gaunce (0.925) - Jensen (0.86)

Richardson (1.15) - Lain (0.6) - Hansen (2)

Sestito (0.75)

[21.085 + 3 contracts]

Hamhuis (4.5) - Bieksa (4.6)

Edler (5) - Tanev (1.5)

Garrison (4.6) - Corrado (0.6)

(2 of Weber, Brookbank, Gervais for about 2.25 million total)

[23.005]

Luongo (5.333)

Eriksson (0.925) [Or Lack for a similar amount]

[6.255]

That's about 50 million in total, so 18 million to resin the Sedins and Vanek.

Vanek will probably be looking for 40-42.5 over 5 years (8 - 8.5 cap), so this only happens if the Sedins sign for about 5 million per, or we move someone like Burr and have a prospect (Shinkaruk, Horvat) step up.

I'd be better if Vanek was Swedish and playing with the Sedins in Sochi...

First off, Buffalo will trade Vanek if he doesn't want to sign an extension.

Secondly, all signs point to Minnesota if Vanek doesn't get traded/an extension. There is a connection there and rumours are floating around that he wants to be a part of the Wild in 2014.
