DonLever
The images showed lifeless children — wrapped in simple white cloths, their pale faces unmarked by any wound — lined up shoulder to shoulder in a vivid demonstration of what activists say was an attack Wednesday by the Syrian regime that killed at least 130 people with toxic gas. The Syrian government has adamantly denied using chemical weapons in an artillery barrage targeting suburbs east of Damascus, calling the allegations "absolutely baseless." The United States, Britain and France have demanded that a team of UN experts already in the country be granted immediate access to investigate the claims. The UN Security Council held emergency consultations about the purported attack, and UN deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey said the head of a UN team sent to Damascus to investigate earlier claims of chemical attacks was in talks with the Syrian government. Videos and photographs showed row upon row of bodies wrapped in white shrouds lying on a tile floor, including more than a dozen children. There was little evidence of blood or conventional injuries and most appeared to have suffocated. Survivors of the purported attack, some twitching uncontrollably, lay on gurneys with oxygen masks covering their faces. Activists and the opposition leadership gave widely varying death tolls, ranging from as low as 136 to as high as 1,300. But even the most conservative tally would make it the deadliest alleged chemical attack in Syria's civil war

inane
In that region there's always talk of chemical warfare use. In the mid-late 2000's Lebanon accused Israel of using white phosphorous, an illegal weapon for warfare, on civilians. Israel later admitted to using the illegal weapon, both in Lebanon and Gaza where they attacked a UN warehouse sheltering hundreds of Palestinians. You probably read one of those stories, as they hit the media like wildfire. (NOT TURNING THIS INTO AN ANTI-XXX THREAD, JUST POINTING OUT THE USE OF CHEMICAL WARFARE IN RECENT FEW YEARS) There needs to be a better international response/punishment for those who use chemical warfare -- especially on civilians. Using normal arms on civilians is one thing, but using chemical weapons pushes it to a new level that needs severe punishment.
DonLever
How do we know it was not the rebels (with assistance from CIA or others) who did it to draw the West into the civil war? On the news, it was said that the chemicals were launched by ballistic missiles. If so, US satellite pictures would show the launch of the missles from Syria government controlled territory. skolozsy2
Like how? You want to send your sons and daughters overseas to fight a war that nobody else seems to care about? Even should there be some global policeman, any action will be criticized heavily. Warmongers, supporting the military-industrial-complex, to get oil/gold/whatever resource, working for the Israeli/MIC/Illuminati/etc, they're out to surround enemy nation of China/Russia/North Korea/whoever. Electro Rock
The Syrian government is winning the war and it would make no sense for them to resort to this, especially right before there were supposed to be U.N. chemical weapons inspections. Its just a little too convenient...
